How Bad is Red?

I am in the process of scheduleing a PPI on a Guards Red '95 993 cab. I really like the car so far (I'll like it more or less after the PPI), 2 owners, always in Southern CA, 50k miles.

Red has always been kind-of a 2nd choice color for me,(the wife says it REALLY screams midlife crisis) but I realize you can't be TOO picky when shopping 10-12 year old cars.

The question is just how tuff will it be to keep the paint nice? I live in sunny, dry San Diego and will drive the car daily with garage at home at night. The parking lot at my office building has NO shade, no underground, etc..

This will be my first Porsche after wanting one since I was 12 and I plan on keeping it awhile (I've had my current driver 10 years next April). I think I'm anal enough to own a red car and keep it mint, just looking for input on just how often I should expect to wax, polish, etc... I refuse to be driving a tired, faded to almost-orange car in a few years. I actually get kind-of bummed out when I see an older red P-car that obviously hasn't been kept up cosmeticly.

close friend of mine has that car - 95 guards red cab with black interior. I think it is absolutely classic porsche. but all color is a matter of taste - if you like it - then its the right color.

to keep it looking sharp install a clear bra on the front end and use Zaino a couple of times a year on the rest of the car. My friends paint looks brand new with that approach!

enjoy joining the Porsche world and consider joining Rennlist. worth every nickle!!

Any more doubts?

Guards Red wasn't my first choice either, but I've grown very fond of it.

Supposedly it is also a good color for when the time comes to part with the car. The hot-rodders in my area call it "resale red".

Not a cab, but you get the idea...

Red is the perfect color for your first Porsche. It's also easier to keep clean than black, although not as fast (everyone knows the black ones are the fastest)

Don't listen to Bob, black 993's come second only to Midnight blue 993's in terms of speed and engine quality. :)

Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Guards red 993.

Sdcabrio,
I own two '95 red 993s and I can tell you that the paint polishes out and shines up better than any car i've ever owned. The '95s are single stage paint, no clear coat, so you're working right on the surface of the color itself when you use an abrasive polish. I use Meranza IP, then Klasse AIO covered with Klasse sealant ...add a coat of S100 carnuba wax and you have a red mirror.

Funny, I am in the same position right now with a red car waiting PPI. I agree that when properly prepared red seems to really look nice.

Can't help you on the color choice, but think about getting a good-quality car cover for the office parking lot if you're worried about sun exposure.

I like my red one too - Classic Porsche. It's a great colore for your first or last one. This is my 6th 911 - finally got a GR one:)

(the wife says it REALLY screams midlife crisis)
Make good eye contact and say, "a hot 20 year old REALLY screams midlife crisis, but I'd rather ride around with you in a stunning car like this."

...just be prepared to be pulled over more often and for no apparent reason.
