Default 993s with LSD?

What percentage of 993s came with the factory LSD option 220?

100% of my 993 does.
Seriously, though, I don't know if even the factory has those kinds of records.

Well, maybe a fairly knowledgeable person could make a good guess. Just curious. Thanks.

Don't let the lack of LSD in a 993 stop your from buying an otherwise fine car. 993 LSD's have two clutch plates versus the 964's four plates, making them an item that wears out quite quickly. Even if you found a car with LSD, there's a good chance that the disks will be toast. Guards Transmission can upgrade the LSD from a two plate to a four plate.

Some 964 LSD's were two clutch plate versions as well.

50% of my 993's have the LSD option

And some 993 LSDs were 4-clutch plate versions. My '95 has a 4-plate LSD.

Great info. After five years on this board, I have never heard of this and/or must have missed the threads. Thanks, guys.

Learn something new every day here
How can I sort out if my 95 has a 2 vs 4 plate LSD... without tearing it down?

When shopping for a 993 how is one to know?

What does Guard charge to upgrade from no LSD to their 4-clutch unit?

Option M220 indicates an LSD. C4S also had LSD standard (so the option does not appear on the car's option sticker).

To go from no LSD to a Guard LSD (or other), you need a new differential housing. To go from factory 2 plate to Guard 4 plate they just swap out the guts - you keep the same differential housing. Note, however, that not all 2-plate versions have enough space to refit with 4-plates. Guard told me they see all kinds of variations in the diff housing.

There is a ton of info available from a search of "M220"

Basicly the street cars have a weaker version of lsd, so all normal 964 and 993 with M220 have that version which consists of 2 extrnally splined disk and 1 internally splined disk/side.

The motorsports trans used in 964RS and 993RS and 964t and 993tt used the more agressive lsd w/ 2 external and 2 internal disks/ side.

on 964 models the G50/10 and G50/52 were used in the RS and turbo respectively and also has 20/100 lock up as opposed to the 40% for street versions

on 993 models only the G50/30, 31, 32, 33 used in the RS and Cup versions used 40/65 as opposed to the normal street 25/65 or 22/40

Hi Bill,
What does it mean when you say that, for example, a 993 normal street LSD has 25/65 or 22/40?

Thanks.
