My guess is that the code was cleared before purchase. I purchased my '96 with the assurance that it had just passed a Maryland state inspection and the light was out. After 800 miles it came on and it would not pass MA state inspection because of SAI code. I have noticed no adverse effects from this code, but I did purchase a code reader that is able to clear codes in order to be sure the CEL is not flagging another problem. It has happened 3 times in 2500 miles.

Some people have had good luck doing a "flush" do a search, FWIRC it cost about a grand....

This piece of advice won't help you now........but for anyone with a 96-98, I don't care how many miles.....replace the check valve often!!!!!!!!.....When I had my top end rebuilt, the shop showed my a check valve that had less than 20k on it.......rusted and corroded shut!!!
change you check valve!!!! Make it part of your normal maintenance schedule.

Yup, replace that SAI-check-valve !!!

I had absolutely no SAI or emission problems (I also have my own code-scanner) but I decided to replace my valve at 28,000 miles - and although - when it was removed - 'it' still worked - it was a smidge rusted inside. BTW, it took my wrench 2+ hours of labor, but hey, "whatever it takes" (to give me thousands of miles of worry-free driving and zero anxiety every time my NY-state (OBD-ii) inspection is due.

Replace Check Valve ++++++1......When I first got mine, Taylor at ASG did a service for me and replaced the valve.....about a year later I did my own replacement and you guessed it, even after a year it was showing signs of that nasty stuff........I think replacing the valve should be part of annual upkeep.

Part # is 993 113 250 03

Everyone should download the PDF of the PET (Porsche Parts Catalog) for their cars. It's free! All the parts diagrams and part numbers you can stand! (This particular one is on page 59).

Go to techinfo.porsche.com

David-dhicks,
I have been in contact with Marc and he said there were some delays in getting the unit for SAI CEL solution ready for retail sale. You have any updates on this?

William,
I had EXACTLY the same thing happen to my car as your friend except mine only had 49,000 miles on it when I purchased it. There was stored information indicating that the codes were cleared at least a half a dozen times according to my mechanic who has the porsche diagnostic software. At 101,000 miles its not surprising to read this though.

i am going to urge my friend to get the software read because i am sure the previous owner knew very well that the car's CEL was comming on.

the previous owner deny's any of it but it would be interesting to do some PI work!

My check valve was shot at 34K miles, what is a safe interval for replacement?
Every 10K miles? 20K? Seems like a part that tends to go bad pretty quickly.
I'm wondering if every 3rd oil change you should just change that valve?
After the first one, they get a lot easier as most of us have place some
anti-seeze or other such material in there, cutting the process time in half or more.....
