OT: Do any 993 members have an IWC Flieger?
 

I know that many of the regular posters on this forum have great taste in watches. Does anyone on this forum wear an IWC Fieger of any type? I've wanted one for ages and am starting to think it would make a nice present to myself for my next birthday

Would love to hear your thoughts on the watch, and see photos, preferable with your car in the background, a la Steve! (Can't go too far off topic.)

I have the IWC 371701 which is the pilots watch chrono-automatic. LOVE IT, I also have an IWC aquatimer automatic with rubber strap. and a few other makes and models..............

I have an IWC watch, but not the Pilot's. I have a simple Pilot's watch which is my almost everyday watch. Just like the car, it's German.

BTW, based on history, I'm not sure if IWC is the right match for Porsche. IWC, afterall, is an American guy trying to show Swiss what industrialization can bring to a cottage industry. That doesn't jive well with a 993 in my book. Although I like my IWC watch quite a lot.

So, I'd look at Sinn 356 and some of their other Fliegers. Then again, there're Porsche Design IWCs from the 80s, especially simple titanium chronos...

I used to have a Ref. 3706, the "original" IWC Flieger with the excellent bracelet as well as the strap. Bear in mind that it is a very heavy watch due to its anti-magnetic case with a heft that will put most other watches to shame. I sold it to fund another watch purchase, but all in all it's a very nice watch.

I have a Fortis Flieger Chronograph and a NB Yaeger Delta (German pitot watch very unique design by Martin Braun).

To answers James' question: mine is actually pretty unique - it was a PVD that the PO polished up. So it shines :). It's actually a nice watch, certainly for the money it's hard to beat. It's made by Ickler, same German company that makes Limes, I believe. Mine is 39mm Medium version as I have small wrists and this is my largest watch so far.

My own taste, curiously, runs towards chronographs from the 50s and early 60s. Funny. because my eyesight get crappier and crappier and Archie is so easy to see.

Mark XVI is a very nice watch. I've looked at it and am still considering it too. They've made it larger this year, 39mm vs. 38, so if you get used, you will probably get a smaller version. Also there's a question of black vs. silver (best quote I've heard is "Black is for people who like plan's interior while silver is for people who like plan's exterior"). And as to where to buy them - TimeZone, of course. I've bought a number of watched there, it's a great place, very similar to Rennlist in spirit.

I actually still suggest looking at Sinn 356 as it's a great German pilot's watch that can be had used under $1K. But IWC is in a different league.

Oh, and if I ever get the right strap or redo the prongs, I'll be wearing this 95-year old thing:

James, I had an IWC Fleiger. I thought it was too small for my wrist and my wrist isn't that large. A Submariner seems to be the perfect size for me. As for buying used watches, go to timezone.com. As with anything else on the internet, make sure you get references. A good place to start is the IWC forum on that site. You will see the regulars there and they are usually the ones you can trust. The Sales Corner is where the buying and selling is done. There are some very reputable sellers on there who constantly buy watches, put them away for a year or two (ie., almost never wear them) and then sell them to fund another purchase. Good luck.

+1 Blows away anything else I have ever owned.

I love Portugese. It's just too big for my wrist.
