What is the oldest 993/964 I can get and count on a working air conditioner?
I currently have a 1999 E55 AMG as our family hauler, and a Factory Five MKII (fake AC Shelby Cobra) with a stock 1987 Mustang 5.0 as a toy car. In the future I would like a 993/964 Coupe as an additional play car for the days when is not 70-82 deg with 0% chance of rain. Good air conditioning is a must have. Wife says her and our now 1 year old daughter must be able to ride in whatever aux play car I get. Am I barking up the wrong tree?
Thanks,
Sean

Since "Good air conditioning is a must have," you may be "barking up the wrong tree." The AC in a 964 and 993 is ok, but not great. Mine is perfectly fine for me. Your best bet is to try the AC on a test drive and see if it is good enough for you. Good luck with your search.

I've got a 1995 with great air conditioning... even in the really hot days this year 100+ temps, it blew cold enough to keep me comfy... not much room in the back seats, however.

A/C is not bad, but not as good as most modern cars either. The back seat is fine for kids . . . once they are out of the car seat, but trying to strap one of those things in the back wasn't worth it for me, because there just wasn't enough room. That said, some have done it.

A child can sit in the back, but an adult will be very uncomfortable.
The back is best for extra cargo room.
My AC blows cold and I have zero complaints in this regard.
Actually, I have zero complaints period.
Your MKII looks amazing. I'm a Cobra fan.

Thank you for the replys. I will keep reading. The Porsche is the shortest 4 seater-ish car I can think of, so with careful arrangement I think I can fit it in my garage behind the F5. I may just need to avoid black interior/ dark exterior if I am worried about heat.

Porsche changed the AC in the 911 when the 964 came out, the system in the 993 is very similar. So, a 1989 Carrera 4 or 1990 Carrera 2/4 would be the earliest cars with reasonably good AC.
The 1999 996 has better air, but still not the freezing cold air that American and Japanese cars have featured for decades.
I think you will find the AC is adequate as long as your car is not baking in the sun all day, as it will take a while to catch up, mostly because of the nature of the 911's layout, where the evaporator and condensors are up front and the compressor is in the back, it's a lot of AC lines to contend with.

From personal experience the a/c on the 993 isn't as cold as modern cars, as other members said, and in my opinion, the back seat is best suited for kids from about 6 to 12. Seems too hard to strap a kid's seat in the back and eventually the kids will get too big to fit comfortably. But I'd still suggest gettin a 993 because it's just an amazing car, and tonnes of fun to drive. I'd also like to point out that the inside of the car gets really hot in the summer (mine's black with black leather interior). I live in portugal and it get's up to about 40º celsius. On some days i have to start the car and turn the a/c on for about 5 mins before getting in. And love your cobra! huge fan!

I believe it was 1992 for the changeover, however, any R-12 911 can be converted to 134a by just flushing the system, changing the compressor fittings and changing out the receiver-dryer. Worked fine on my 1988 3.2 Carrera.

I dream of 70-82 degrees.
Just about manage that with the oven full on & the door open and sitting on the hob over.
TBS I think the bigger problem with cooling is the sheer amount of heat sink off the exhausts and motor which permeats the cabin rather than the colour of the trim.
I've been lucky with both my 996 and my 993 that the air-con has easily coped with hot day (which are quite rare here despite Mr. Gore's promises).
More likely to get in a sweat when I miss a down change and go o-er.
Failing that, its finding a pool of fecking oil on the garage floor under the rear anti-roll bar. That really does make me break out in a sweat.
