Should I get my clutch replace at the dealer at 1/2 price.
Just want everyone to know that I don't know much about clutches. The only stick I own besides my 993 was my 1985 murker xr4ti that I had 10 years ago.
When I bought my 993 at a local porsche dealer, Rector Motor in bulingame CA last year. They put in the contract that they will replaced my clutch at for about $2000 they said the list price on it is $3800. I have 18 months from the date of sale to get back to them (I have about 5 months left).
This is because when I purchase the car I compained that the clutches engages late (when it is almost fully release). I pointed this out to try to get a better price on the car. But what do I know, like I said don't know much about clutch.
So a year passed and I drove my p car for about 1,000 miles (forgive me for driving it so little.I am keep it off the road so you folks can buy it from me later). There is no problem I have notice with the clutch, except it does engage late at about 1/4 or 1/8 from fully release. But I would say it drive like a normal clutch. Not like a new clutch nor like a clutch that is about to go or one in a very old car.
So the question is should I take advantage of the deal I have with the dealer and have the clutch replace? Is this really a good deal? Or can I just go somewhere else a get it replace at 2,000-2,500 later.
By the way my 993 has 23,xxx miles on it and I don't plan to drive it more than 1,000 miles next year.

I would be very tempted to get it done now for the discounted price.... you'll need a new one soon enough.

"Shouldn't" need a clutch at 23-24k miles, and $3800 for a replacement is a ridiculous price. At $2000, you would be covering their total cost plus.

$2k for a new clutch...parts and labor? Most shops are $4k plus for this work. If you have the disposable income, I'd do it.

C'mon ... $1200-1500 if your flywheel is okay. It's just dropping the motor and replacing the disk and a few other parts, after all. This is assuming you are not doing the RS clutch and lightweight flywheel.
I would recommend you drive a few more 993s and see how yours compares. They are all slightly different. And besides, if you're driving 1k miles per year and the clutch is not slipping now, why bother? You could easily get another 10 years out of the original ;-)

My feeling is that the dealer would never agree to this if he didn't already know that the clutch was a problem. I say replace it and then you will drive the car 1000 miles a year for 25 years. The LWF really makes a difference so you might consider that while you're in there.

At a minimum, wait another 4 months to get your money's worth. I also think 3800 is silly unless it includes a flywheel, throw out bearing, slave cylinder, and everything else possible "while you're there".

Clutch
Just paid $3,400 for a clutch with all accoutrements, upper valve cover gaskets, main seal, and install of new Bilstein HD's and sway bars. You know, the kit from Viper Bob on Ebay. Great deal! Just had it aligned today and it is a different car.

The Dealer wouldn't agree to this unless they KNEW that they at themselves covered at "50%" in case you did come back, and in case the clutch did go bad. That way they didn't have to guess about the life of the clutch....it was either good and you would not be back, or it would go bad and you would be back and pay for the entire job. Drive the car and get the clutch done correctly when it is needed, not by some dealer that already has your agrrement to pay no matter how many corners they cut in the repair!
