Your avatar - is it you, or Tony Little?

No, simply curious.

As to your original question, I think you'll find most 993s idle at around 800 or just below. Quite a few Rennlisters have found success with a thorough cleaning of the Idle Speed Control Valve (top, middle of engine).

He tries with much sound and fury but often to little effect.

The rough idle symptom is a 'characteristic' on some 993's. It’s a non issue but quite a few 993 owners have experienced rough idling and cleaning the ISV did nothing to cure the rough idle that I still experience on my 96. Including changing the caps/rotors and fuel filter. Plugs and wires are next on the list. After getting it assessed by my wrench, he confirmed that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my 993 even with only 39K.
If you are not exhibiting any codes (misfire) and it’s pulling hard, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.

Turn your AC on low and it will bump it up a bit to smooth it out.
