Need advice or opinions on buying a C4
I posted this in the 993 forum at 6speedonline.com but have gotten no replies so far so I thought I'd post it here, too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking at a black 1995 C4 with tan interior. It has 131,000 miles on it, excellent condition (I've driven it several times), and almost perfect paint. It was just inspected here in PA. It belongs to my brother-in-law's brother. He already has a '97 turbo and a 993 race car so he is looking to sell the '95, preferably to someone in the family. That's where I come in. I would get a PPI and leakdown test done before buying. Assuming these test results are okay, what kind of price seems reasonable? I have been searching Rennlist, local dealerships that specialize in used Porsches, and general classifieds. I think maybe $23000 or $24000 would be a good price but I don't really know. Anybody out there have opinions on this?
Thanks in advance.

You have firsthand knowledge that it's in excellent condition, and if it passes the PPI, I'd say that's a fair price. Also, I'm assuming you can review the service history of the car? Just the same, I'd keep 3k-4k in reserve, unless it's "immaculate" it's going to need some work.

The owner's brother (my brother-in-law) mentioned $24K in passing but not to take it as gospel. I guess this falls into the category of "I hope." On the plus side, he really wants me to buy it. And it probably falls somewhere between "immaculate" and "needs some work." Good point about the reserve cash, though.
You guys are great with the opinions and info. Thanks much.

I'm looking myself right now although more likely will end up with a 964. The price you mention seems to be about what the higher mileage 993s are going for. Remember, even if a PPI shows good engine condition, the chassis, shocks, bushings and everything else like fan motors, AC compressor, electronic modules, ECU etc. also have 131K on them so plan on putting probably a couple thousand into the car in the next year or two. Have the valve guides been done yet, this is a serious consideration for these cars and should be factored in too.
That being said, knowing the history of the car is a great benefit, I feel you buy the seller as much as you buy the car, so knowing/trusting the seller certainly adds some value to this purchase. All in all, probably worth serious consideration.

$24K seems like an awesome deal to me. The mileage is a bit high, but if you know the history, that is WELL worth it.
My SC had 168K when I sold it, and I it ran very well, dyno'd at slightly higher than spec HP after 25 years. Point is, I wouldn't be scared of the mileage, as long as the car was cared for.
