Is there a difference between MAF's on OBDI and OBDII cars?
 

I am trying to follow the workshop manual procedure for tracking down intake leaks, due to my 1126 fault code - lean right bank. The page I have, I believe is for 1995 models, though my car is a '96. There is no sealing plate on my MAF. I have the protective grill, but that's it and that side goes right into the airbox. There's not even any place where the sealing plate could have attached to it, so I'm pretty sure I never had one. Is this correct? I don't know how to attach the page I'm looking at, as it's a PDF and has a lot of other pages with it. At this point I'm thinking of just spraying the whole thing down with MAF cleaner and putting it back in, then having my injectors cleaned by a pro.

And here's the MAF with the sealing plate on it. I'm starting to think this is some special tool used to put compressed air into the system to check for leaks downstream. Where does one buy this sealing plate?

It might still be available from Porsche, #000-721-926-40 ($39.12USD MSRP). For models prior to the 993 you could make one out of an old fuel filter. :)

Ok, so it's a tool and doesn't come on my car and isn't missing.

How else can I safely check for vacuum leaks? Just spray starter fluid or brake cleaner around with the engine running and see if it bumps my already low idle up? Use a gas torch with no flame?

Good question Rick, I am also chasing a similar problem. I occassionaly get a P1140 Engine Load Control. After some research it sounds like an intake leak somewhere. One shop recommend a "smoke test" which puts a compressed volume of tinted air into the intake and you can see if any leaks occur. That is as far as I have gone with it...I have not even had the change just to browse around to make sure I don't just have a loose or misaligned clamp on the MAF. Please let me know what you tried!
