Default How accurate is your Oil Level guage?

My Oil Level guage seem to stick a bit. A little tap and it usually pops back to life. Is this normal?

I'm thinking of just sending it out to North Hollywood Speedometer.

Hi McGarret,

If you've got to tap it to unstick, no, not normal ...up to you whether to address it though as you should always rely on the dipstick. FWIW, my gauge is spot on like Dan's, so it is worthwhile to have as an "indicator" guage.

NH is great ...sent an Alfa Tach to them years ago and they are prompt and good at what they do.

Mine reads low all of the time. It was in the red just last week (after 30 min. warm up, idling on a level surface). I drove to my shop and the guys checked the dipstick for me. It was PERFECT. I can't rely on it at all. If you get it repaired, I'd love to know how it turns out.

Perfectly accurate, however I check my stick every 500 miles just to be safe.

Sticky needle, my oil pressure gauge does this, let us know if they can fix it for a reasonable amount. There are guys here that offer instrument servicing, so interested to know if it can be fixed without spending £££s.

Mine does this too. I suspect it's more an adjustment of the arm of the sending unit in the oil tank than the gauge in the dash.

Chris, is this correct?

Default Can't read the dipstick

I have a hard time reading the dipstick.
There's probably some oil that remains in the tube that gets on the stick as I pull it out. So I can't clearly see the limit. I usually do it like 10 times in a row to guess where the level is, and I'm still not sure.

Anybody got a good tip to get a more accurate reading on the dipstick ?
Is yours easy to read ?

I'd like to rely more on the dipstick rather than the guage.

I check it a dozen times before I'm convinced what the oil reading is. Anyone have any tips on getting done in half the time?

My gauge works great.

Send yours to NHS - I've dealt with them numerous times.

As for checking the dipstick, generally I can see a small area where you can see some bubbles and a little more oil on the stick. This is what I take as the level. Seems consistent. Above it will be some more oil but you should be able to see the difference.

When I drove to the shop a few weeks ago, I made my mechanic show me how to read the dipstick... because I couldn't figure it out either. His tips:
Car has to be warmed up for at least 30 minutes... must be running and on flat, level ground
As you pull out and push in the dipstick, let it twist (of course, clean it off the first time or two you pull it out)
Look at it in direct sunlight (my oil is really clean and hard to see in my garage)
Flip the dipstick over (sometimes the oil lays on the edges, but you can't trust that) look for the oil on the flat side of the twists.
A good oil level is in the middle of the twists... he said less oil is better than overfilling in these cars.
Does that make sense? I'm not explaining this as well as he did... it's kind of a visual thing.
Hope that helps!

Mine is a about as useful as **** on a bull.....use the dip stick if you really need to know how much oil is in the car.
