My next door neighbor has had a Lexus and just headed off to college in his brand new 2007 4Runner limited. Not bad for being 18 and on your 2nd car.

Should I be jealous? Nope, I should be marrying his older sister!

I dunno, I thought that MB is pretty damn heavy though and doesn't handle that great (relatively).

Even M3s & M5s IMO aren't that fast at track. I've never driven myself so I can't really speak from that perspective but just comparing those cars when I've shared track with them.

Very true, there is no substitute for the feeling you get when you see a hot Porsche if you're a Porsche guy. If he had gotten a 997 GT3, I would have been MUCH more happier for him than I am now.

BTW, I prefer the look of your 7series in the background. And of course the 993.
Was your E55 the newer model or the early 90's one? I sure hope he isn't in for a bunch of breakdowns. His last car before his AMG C32 was a Pontiac Bonneville that he ran till it was practically dead, over 200K miles! He donated it to a charity.

That's a great perspective. Maybe that's why I'm so happy right now. It's great to have "hot car stuff" in common with a next door neighbor.

Was it a 2000 - 2002 model (W210)?

I have a 2002 E55 AMG (W210) and I can tell you that it is a great car for what it is. It is not a track appliance, but it is a very fast, very safe and very capable, while carrying 4 or 5 adults and luggage!
It has also proven to be very reliable so far and it has 90K!

And they're so so affordable right now..pretty tempting. I've been lurking on the E55 sites.....there's one for sale in my backyard for 16k

Back to regular programming.

My friend just got an E63 too. It's more stiffly sprung than you would think, and the electronic gizmos and doodads keep the thing on a relatively tight line. And that much power makes up for a whole lot.

Pretty bad *** looking sedan, but that's a conditional statement. That said, it smokes our cars off the line, and can haul four people's worth of luggage and golf clubs without having to take the woods out, etc. There's something to respect there.

Torque Monster Locomotive.

Yes, unfortuantely A LOT of cars are faster than a N/A 993 in a straight line. But, you could buy 2 good condition 993s for 1 of your buddy's AMG Benz.

That said, congrats to him!

i have to say the MB cars are pretty tempting to me- and i'm not of typical MB age. that 8 cylinder E-class your buddy has there is a pretty impressive machine. it will take all of porsches efforts to even match that amg e, let alone beat it when they introduce their sedan. that car your buddy bought is about the most capable stock 4-door on the planet. i'm not sure i understand the criticism???

benz makes big, heavy, luxurious, safe people haulers. porsche makes lightweight sports cars.

i mean no offense to anyone one this board or thread, but i find it amusing that someone can write about how impressed they are with their new honda odyssey minivan, and most here will likely agree and discuss the benefits and attributes of that vehicle. however, try doing the same with proper GT car or sports sedan, and the fangs pop out like someone tried to grab one of your french fries!

how dare you show interest in a car that could perform equal or better than our 10 year old 911's! take him away...and- chop off his pinky finger!

all in good fun, mates!

I assume you meant:

"benz makes big, heavy, luxurious, safe people haulers. porsche makes luxury heavyweight sports cars and luxury heavyweight people haulers"

Or show me one non-luxury, lightweight Porsche sportscar from their current line-up? Cayman is kinda close but even that is pretty damn heavy.
(FYI: 997 GT3 RS is not that much under 3300 lbs which is a damn discrase and hundreds of pounds too heavy to be called a lightweight sportscar, or in another words: a RS. And comes with almost all luxury items known to man a lot of them mandatory)
