Wiring harness recall - still on?
 

Apologies if this have been covered before, but I have been searching on "wiring harness, and have not been able to find whether Porsche will still honour the recall this late in the day.. I believe my 993 still has the "bad" harness installed, as I suspect the previous owner was out of the country when the recall may have taken place (have been looking at the cabling, looks pretty new, but has the "bad" part code) I was planning to raise this with my OPC when I take it in for service this fall. What response should I expect (I live in Spain)? Has anyone had recent experience?

How do you know if it has been done?

The guy I got my car from told me about the wiring harness recall and one for my roof (it's a cab), but he hadn't taken it to the dealer yet. When I called, they looked up the Vin# and knew it hadn't been done. The dealer wouldn't touch the wiring harness because of my supercharger, but took care of the roof issue.

My local dealer said a 10+ year old car is outside of their recall window. PCNA told me to take a hike. It was a very dissapointing experience.

Is there a statute of limitations on recalls :confused: ..... if so, presumably the clock starts ticking when the recall was issued .... which was some considerable interval after the manufacturing date . :)

I am the original owner of a 1996 993 Coupe that I purchased new in November, 1995. I received a large white postcard from Porsche Cars North America last month (8/07) and it said in bold print 'CUSTOMER WORKSHOP CAMPAIGN NOTICE, CAMPAIGN W301" and it was stamped "3rd Notification". I heard of the wire harness recall before but never got any notice from Porsche and my address has been the same ever since I owned the car. I figured since I wasn't contacted in all the previous years, my car was OK and wasn't subject to the recall and I never had problems with the harness. Anyway, I brought my 993 into the dealer and they confirmed my harness was a bad one per the part number and they scheduled me for a replacement harness. Waited a week for the part to come in and they had my car for two days and did the recall repair, free of charge and they covered my 2 day car rental.
I am very pleased with Porsche and the fact that they contacted me almost 12 years after I bought the car. I have the full updated Technical Service bulletin dated 1-22-03 (37 pages) detailing all part numbers, repair instructions, etc.

My '96 has had the recall executed .... but the motor I pulled from my ''96 C4S parts car had not, confirmed by a VIN check with Porsche ( it has version -xxx.08 installed).
My friendly dealer appears caught in a 'catch 22' over this, for as much as they would enjoy the PCNA installation fee and providing me with a free harness update ..... to qualify, I must drive the car of that VIN in to the service dept: with the motor on a dolly and the chassis gone to the crusher, driving will be difficult :banghead:.
Apparently, my option will be to buy the harness and install at home before using this motor .... the TSB will be a good guide!

What is the problem with the harness?

Oh man, not good. I took my car in for the cab recall and I'm pretty sure they'd have mentioned if the harness recall wasn't done yet. I will verify either way.

You can check the wire harness number which is on a label on the wire harness. Any wire harness part number ending in .00, .01, .04, .05, .06, .07, .08 and .80 is a defective harness. Mine ended in .08 and had to be replaced. See my post above yours. Open your engine compartment and look to the left. You will see the black plastic relay cover on the far left. Looks like a black triangle. Remove the three screws from the cover and remove the cover. Now you have an open view of the start of the wiring harness. Part number starts with 993.607.016 and ends with 2 numbers mentioned above. If the label is facing away from you and you can't read it, move a mirror of some type underneath the harness to verify the part number. My part number was 993.607.016.08. If your harness has one of these numbers, I would take it to your nearest Porsche dealer and ask for the W301 Service campaign to fix it at their cost. Parts and labor are very expensive...Good luck-Gary

The engine harness kit (the part number starts with 000; I think it's 000 043 204 61) is quite cheap for some reason; try your dealer or Sunset. From memory it'll be $100 or less.

Have a look in the service book. The last page should show service campaigns. The wiring harness recall was W301. Porsche dealers in the UK will honour the recall FOC irrespective of the age of the vehicle.
