I agree with all on the Alpine X001 !! I had installed it for my drive out to maine this summer.. The install was easy, the only trick was getting the cabling to fit ( but standard issue for any aftermarket HU in a 993, the dash area is cramped!) I have my ipod live in my glove compartment and it's rather stealth.. I also hooked an XM receiver to it and stashed that in the footwell.. The amp seems to be much punchier then my previous Sony HU.. I think it's because Alpine had a bit more room to put a decent amp inside, as there is no CD drive or cassette player.. Design is a bit bling for my taste, but being able to view album art is kinda trick! Also, the alpine amps fit under the passenger seat!

I have a Nakamichi 6 disc in-dash changer with an aux cable for the ipod and it has been great. Very low key and no flashing neon lights like many other face units on the market today. That combined with rockford fosgate speakers up front and JBLs in the back and at approx 85mph with the top down, music sounds good.

Default Install with Pics

So, I installed an Alpine 9883 head unit last weekend.

I have zero expertise in this type of installation, but managed to remove a previous messy install, and cleanly install back to the porsche harness which I wired into the Alpine harness. Took me about 2 hours, but most of that was the harness wiring, which I should have ideally done on a workbench (which I don't have living in manhattan) Anyway I digress....

The install went very well, and for just over 200 bucks delivered this is great value! Links to the ipod, and works well thru my (non-hifi) stock speaker set up (speakers may have been upgraded, haven't looked).

I personally don't think its worth spending $$$s on a stereo when you have a $10,000 sound system behind the back seats!

Here's a pic of the head unit in the dash. Its not stock, but doesn't look to shabby.

Cheers

Phil

hmm, yes, if "Porscheness" refers to antiquated, no mp3 CD capabilities, no legit iPod interfacing (other then an AUX input), underpowered, rather expensive with a strong Dieter Rams look, then yes.. Cheers. I'll take a slightly blinged out unit, with all the iPod controls in the front of the unit.. and the iPod in the glove box. Again, it's personal taste.. I kinda like music, and I like having about 600 albums available at the front of my Head unit-

i'll have to update my system... (though i never use it now). i'd like coleman's guts w/ maybe a naka head unit. little less bling for when the top is down (which is almost 24-7).

I know people on this forum seem to love outdated Becker headunits, but Becker also makes some nicely styled models with MP3 capability.
