OK, just got this from a friend and native German speaker.
"In German, brand names tend to inherit the gender and article of the
type of product they describe, so I guess with cars it cames from "Der
Wagen" (though it's Das Auto). Anyway, all cars are "der" - der Audi,
der BMW, der Renault, you get the idea. "

of course if we had gender in English, all cars and boats would be feminine

I say por-sha, but always thought the people saying poorsh were using slang the same way BMWs are refered to as Bimmers?

I never imagined that anyone actually thought that poorsh was a correct pronounciation.

Pronunciation is important. There's an old joke about the guy who hires a day laborer to paint the porch on his house. Gives the guy a can of green paint and says to sand it and then paint the porch. An hour later the guy comes in and says he's done, but thinks the guy is crazy for wanting to repaint such a beautiful car. And he says it's pronounced Porscha, not porch.

.... I always answer ... yes, it is a nice Porsch-ah, thank you. Enough said. Anything more is like trying to teach a pig to sing ....
Did you know that Carnegie ... like in the New York Carnegie's and Carnegie Hall is pronounced 'car-NEHGEE'? Emphasis on the last two syllables ... talk about a family name that's been slaughtered for 100 years by everybody including most of the media ... but we're Ahmurican's ... that's how we roll.

I have learned to say it both ways at the same time.
There is a place in the middle that is just right.

Porsh is just as bad as the people that say PorschAGHAGHAGH whats up bro.

For those that have not seen my car I tell everyone I have a Volkswagen Bug.

Those that have seen it, it is just a "Used Car" that shines up nicely.

Those that are interested get the full rundown including proper pronunciation of the family name.

But if you try to correct me, I'll just look at you like like you have a big bogger hanging out of your nose. Then I'll walk away quietly and laugh at you.

But if your 4 or 5 year old child corrects me.. I'll tell you that you have a cool kid.

Could not agree more....

I guess I kind of change it up depending who I am talking to.... If they are not into cars or the brand I pronounce it closer to "porch".. at a PCA meeting "Porshee" or "Porsha"..... never in million years would I correct someone else. The car/brand carries enough stigma (stuck up ****** drive Porsche’s) I don’t want to add fuel to the fire.

I pronounce it Porsch-a also. I don't always correct people either.
In my last unit my Soldiers gave me a hard time about driving it, but they were car guys also. So I ordered them pronounce it correctly. It was fun, the Warrant Officer that worked for me always super emphasized it after that and called it a pors-SCHA.
