Default For duffers stuck with H-1's...

My 95 has H1's and personally I think they are weak an insipid even on high beam. I've seen some Hella "30's" I think they are called that promise thirty percent more illum. Can anybody shed any light or anecdotal info on the Hella H-1's or any other brand???

Marlon,
best upgrade I did is to go with HIDs. search the archives, there is plenty of recommendations and GRMNXTC even has a installl shown with pictures. I installed the ballasts inside the buckets, very easy to do. and the low beams will be so bright, you won't need to use the Highs very often.

The install is only slightly more involved than changing the bulbs, depening on how reversable you want it to be, you can splice wires, or put connectors in. I went the connector route, and carry spare H1 bulbs just in case.

Initially I got the HID kit off ebay (4300K H1) for something like $120. before I got into taking the headlights out, I did some searching on the archives and ordered 2 replacement ballasts for $49 each. Then I started the install and found out that my originals fit inside. SO, I have 2 spares.

The Vertex kits have ballasts made by Exsun, I noticed that both sets of ballasts I have also are made by Exsun, just slightly different packaging. Incidentally, the factory HIDs use ballasts that are made in China. The major difference with the factory system, is that it uses a separate ballast and ignitor, which was state of the art in ~96. The ignitor is mounted behind the headlight, and the ballast is mounted in the trunk. I think the way to go now is mount the combo unit inside the headlight bucket. I did a test and decided that it did not generate a significant amount of heat. --Again, search the archives, it is all there.

Why is the OEM part $1400 and the kits on ebay ~$50? Also, why did you go with toe 4300K vs 6000k, 10000k, 12000k?

I decided on either 4300 or 6000 as both are "white" as you go higher in color temp, the color shifts to more blue. I prefer the white. Between 4300 and 6000, the lumen output is higher with the 4300, I am not sure why, but it is, thus I went with that color.

I would guess the factory part is much more expensive, well, because it is a factory part. and actully if you can find it for $1500, that is a deal. Last I checked, the factory litronic systems were going for closer to $2800.

Go with the 4300k as they are cloest to the factory HID and actually the aftermarket units are better than the Porsche OEM items.

The 993's projector headlight design is a perfect canidate for an aftermarket HID upgrade. As you can see where Porsche went cheap on the 996, no long projector beam headlight on their regular light, only the factory litronics.
