Default Factory Shocks

So I've searched, and keep pulling up threads I can't help but read, but none seem to have my answer. What was the factory shock absorber for a 96' 993 cab? Should I go Biletein HD or factory?

Factory standard was a Monroe sourced set. The Bilstien HD units are the best (in my opinion) for a nice street ride. They will improve the feel of your car by a noticeable amount.

Mine had "BOGE" stamped in them. Did Monroe OEM them for Boge?

I just did my '97 Cab last Oct. but I'll be damned if I can remember what I took out. I do know they were totally shot, I turned the front struts upside down and just the weight of the lower strut (no spring) compressed the struts fully! The rears weren't quite as bad but they did need replacing. My car had 66k mi. at the time.

I went w/ the Bilstein HD's and MO30 springs and love the setup.

BOGE is owned by ZF/Sachs, the same people who do your clutch and many other parts. BOGE also does the OEM shocks for BMW.

+1

I went with Bilstein HD shocks and M030 coils. Great setup.

I had 1 year old Boge OE dampers on my Targa when I bought it. With the M030 suspension on the 17" Targa wheels the ride was very jarring over less than pristine surfaces despite the tire (S03, PS2, Pilot Sport Cups). When I bought my current C2 ride which had stock suspension on 18" wheels it rode lik a Lexus in comparison and it may well have been on its original dampers which are likely to have been past it. While this is an apples and oranges comparison, my guess is that the Boge is not a particularly capable damper particularly when compared with modern competition which has undergone considerable development since the mid 90s. Boges are also know to have poor life. Definitely do not go with new Boges. I would not hesitate to go for the HDs in their stead. I have put on a KW kit which I hopefully will sample in the next week or two.

Mine has standard ROW M30 and I find it quite harsh as well.

I'll post in a week or two on the Bilstein HD's. I'm picking some up from Gert next week.

Porsche used the three suppliers Monroe, Boge and Bilstein for the 993.
