Default An ode to pre purchase inspection

For the ones in the market for another P-car...or, even more dangerous, your first one...remember: Always contract a PPI from a reputable shop prior to your final decision!!!

My friend was in love with a "photogenic" black 993 from a well-known Houston independent dealer. Although hypnotized by the great pics PPI, he took my advice and got a PPI done...

The mechanic found a bad steering rack, most of the panels were repainted and it had significan amount of rust on the chassis due to salty roads...

My friend sent a polite e-mail to the dealer stating he was not closing the deal because of the PPI result...then he got such "pearl of answer":

"Please do not waste anymore of my time your looking for something that does not exist on a 11 year old 911........"

Excellent advice Pedro. I am in the car business and the old saying goes

"You can polish and clean a tird, but it's still a tird"

PPI's are a must. And for the comment from the dealer he is full of sh*t those cars do indeed exist (just look at most of our cars here on Rlist) he just hasn't spent the money to get one.

Right on to the PPI-I went through two before I finally got the right car.

PATRICK-Are you in Texas too??????????? Small world. No Beeline down here on the Border. I am without again, but will be driving the 993 down in July. Does this mean I'll have to come up to Big D for a ride?????

Can't wait for all the independent, unaffiliated, completely satisfied, low post count Rennlist members with IP addresses in Texas to start posting.

hmm, bad rack wouldn't scare me (that's gonna happen at some point)...i am surprised to hear there was a problem with rust though. i didn't think that was an issue for 993s (since they are galvanized). no doubt though...i wouldn't buy a used porsche w/o a ppi (just too many things that could go wrong which might break the bank!).

Depends how long they've been underwater, I suppose.

Rust starts where sloppy window installers knife their way through in efforts to remove old glass (windshield), compromising the galvanised sheet metal. Then water gets into the channel and starts the evil process.
