Hi RL'ers

Wouldn't you know it, I'm starting the weekend long PCA Drivers Education School tomorrow night and got an unfixable flat in one of my rear tires tonight. I'll put my street wheels and tires (S-03's) back on for the school, but am in a quandry for the track tires which are MSPC's. I will be doing almost exlusively autox's for a while and eventually TT's. I understand the MSPC's are not great for autox because of the time it takes them to heat up, so I hesitate to buy two more rears at this stage even though the fronts are still in OK condition.

I've been searching through the forums and identified the tires most recomended for autox, but it seems, very few are in my particular tire size which is 225/40/18 fronts and 285/30/18 rears.

I had basically settled on getting the Toyo RA-1's since I will be driving back and forth to events, but they apparently don't come in my size. Other considerations were the Kumho Victoracer V700, the V710s or possibly V700s, but again, don't appear to come in my size.

For what I want them for and in my size, are the Hoosier A6's my only option? I'll post this in the autox forum too, but thought I'd start here. All thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Ooops. My mistake. Looks like the 710's will indeed be a good fit.

I have the RA-1 225 / 285 on my NB993 and they seem to work. Ran them at Fontana with great success (and drove them from here to there and from here to......still going. Plus, these are a great AX/TT tire, lot's of heat cycles in them.

David, Are your rears 285? I thought only 275 was available.
This could be very good news if Toyo has added the 285.

And if they are 285, where did you buy them?

I just bought a set of BFG G-Force KDW-IIs for the spring DE and was very impressed! I pushed them pretty hard and got no complaints - they talk to you when you slide the car, and they are wearing suprisingly evenly - Gateway International Raceway here in St. Louis is very hard on right fronts. Plus, the tread pattern looks pretty cool, too!

there must be something in the local water here.
last night my wife was pinched off in a corner @ La Costa X El Camino and badly curbed her Caymans inside rear tire and tore the sidewall.
I doubt that we'll get it together in time for the weekend class.

maybe they'll let us drive the OBK wagon, wouldn't THAT be fun?

I would highly recommend the Kumho V710 as they have great grip (on par with Hoosiers) and really good longevity. I drive on mine to events with no issues.

Another option, especially if you are a newbie (and therefore max grip tire is secondary to learning the nuances of autox), is the Hankook that was mentioned in another thread. The Hankooks are on sale for about $600 per set! Not as good as the Kumho/Hoosier, but still a great tire.

I also just purchased 710s a few months ago and can't say enough great things about them. I have only done one auto-x on them, but I was the fastest car out of 95 by nearly a second and a half. My car felt like it was on rails. I went with 245/35/18 in the front and 285/30/18 in the rear and didn't expereince any rubbing.

Great. Thanks for the input guys. Just sealed the deal on a used set of the V710's w/ almost no wear (more than 3/32 tread left on them and no camber or toe wear either) for $550. They were used for less than 20 autox laps and were heat cycled from tirerack before 1st use. Seems like a good deal.

I won't have them in time for this weekends drivers school, which is OK since it may be wet anyway. However, I should have them by the following weekends autox. Yay!

Craig, I hope you get your tire issue resolved too.

You can buy Toyo RA-1 at The Wheelstore in Oceanside. 285's seem to work well in the rear.
