Check Engine light

Is this supposed to light up when you turn the key, and maybe go out again when started ? Mine didn't even come on when the lambda probe was toast.

Peter, if you have a european car, you do not have a check engine light. All european cars have an OBD version 1 or OBD1. The USA-Canada cars have OBD2, thus have a Check Engine Light. Just for info, all the 993 turbo's have OBD 2 around the world.
So you won't ever see yours light up, because you don't have it.

That's interesting. Is that just the Euro cars? I have a MY95 OBD1 (US) car and it definitly has a CEL. Ask me how I know! ;)

Oh, but I DO have it. At least, there's a light in the gauge that reads 'check engine' It's next to the EBD-diff lights. I've just never seen it come on. I also have TWO 'lights' check lights in the clock, where the manual mentions only one. It's a 12/94 MY '95 with an untracable Factory past. Certain conspiracy theorists have suggested Mr. Inverted Glasses himself drove it, but I find this hard to believe. Maybe the lady that cleaned his office did, though.

I haven't found any region flag related code inside the ECU that turns off the CEL so you should be able to just plug a bulb into the gauge and read out the fault codes with the gas pedal?

Aye, thanks !

If both ROW/US ECUs were the same, I do not see any reason not to...
the ROW ECU/DME does not have the capacity to log the obdII event-log.
for odbII proceedure check, several unknowns are to be measure to create the event-log.
the three way catalytic converter, that is only for obdII with four o2 sensors. Event log has to clear timing between O2 sensors heating before converter and after.
the Secondary air injection with its famous air pump and check valve, etc. etc.
here is the obdII definition event-log
