OT: Good communities in the Raleigh Triangle

With new business ventures getting closer and more like a reality, there is a good chance I will be relocating to the Triangle in the next several months.

I follow Money's top places to live and all stuff and know Cary ranks as one of the top places in the US. Raleigh ranks up there as well.

Been glancing at homes in Raleigh, Cary, Clayton, Wake Forest, and Apex. First off, I like the home prices!!! Secondly, I like the home prices.

I dont need to live right in Raleigh. I have been kinda a burb person for a number of years. I like to be central to a lot of things. Durham plays as part of the business venture as well as Raleigh.

Any suggestions would be great.

Hi 95 C4 993. My brother is a real-estate agent in Raleigh - we both grew up in the triangle - and it is a wonderful place to live. If you'd like me to put you in touch, PM me.

sean

PS - Our family moved from Salt Lake to Durham in the early 80s...I still have fond memories of our home on Parkview (Mt. Olympus)...good luck with the move!

I have lived here for 10 years and love it, try The Bedford in North Raleigh, everything is pretty much at your fingertips and new homes are going up daily, the community is just gorgeous. My brother lives in the Stonehenge community, awesome neighborhood off of Creedmore. Theres a really neat old neighborhood going through a transformation - Oakwood - the home that was redone on TV's Extreme Home Makeover is right on the edge of that neighborhood. Just a really neat place to live, lots of young families. I just took a job in Cary - its nice but feels like a big golf community if that makes sense. I just like the character that Downtown Raleigh has. Good luck, I am a Pittsburgh transplant and can't imagine living anywhere else!

You're going to miss the skiing! I haven't made it up there the last couple of years but Park City, Deer Valley .. fabulous and so easy via bus from SLC airport. Are you taking all 3 cars??

People said I would miss the ocean when I moved from CA. Funny that the same people that say that rarely go to the ocean and I see about 12 days of beach a year, at least. I have so many things I like to do, living someplace only means Im a plane ticket away from a place I want to see or something I want to do. I take a lot of time for personal travel.

Yep, all 3 vehicles will come along. The Bronco, Porsche, and Explorer.

It is a great area

As is the Richmond, Charlottesville and Williamsburg.....stretch of I-64....The dollar goes along for Real Estate.....quality of life is great....

Either one would be a great choice!

Good Luck

I had great experience with my realtor in Oct. '06 before and AFTER the sale on investment property: http://www.timburrell.com/ PM me for details.

I bought in Morrisville. Some of the best schools, which is always good for resale.

Depends on what you are looking for... any area specific preferences? I have settled on Wakefield Plantation in North Raleigh. It's a TPC golf community with schools, stores, ymca etc.

Golf I have really have no interest in, even though I golf a little. I prefer frisbee golf. :) Living in a golf community wouldnt really matter.

Three car garage minimum, at least 1/3 acre, and a little space between the houses -not 6 feet apart from each other

I have been doing a little homework and do like the North Raleigh area. Seems active, nice, and lots going on. Im going to fly down there in the next few months and check things out. Schools are important. Im a fan of Charter Schools and I know Raleigh has one of the top schools in the nation-the good old lottery system of getting in.

Where's the nearest ski ice slope in the east?

Wake county is fastest growing area, Cary is lots of malls and new developments. I like older parts of Durham (Trinity Park) and Chapel Hill (the historic part, around campus), myself. Got kids? Gotta think about schools, then. I feel like Durham and CH are more old-style communities (with the good and bad that goes with that), while the otehr areas are burbs.

Just depends on what you like.

As for prices, yes, less than many places, but surprisingly as the market cools off in some areas, it has not much here. In my area of Durham, it has actually seemed to increase quite significantly in teh last year, while CH had big runs over recent years.

Another option that I would consider were I to do it all over would be to go North, get a large peice of land and build, or buy a small farm on 15-30 acres. Have a horse, and some space.

In your situation if you have the bones, consider a local home, and a second place somewhere different - coast or mountains. Personally, I prefer the moutains. Lots of lovely areas out by Asheville, nice place to go for a while.

Finally, VIR is near! That is probably the real reason for the move!!!

Thanks for all the feedback. I prefer suburbia with central access to about everything. Seems like the Cary, North Raleigh, Morrisville, Wake Forest area's are probably at the top of my list. But who knows.

As long as I have my 3+ car garage and a little room (room by not meaning like at least 1/3-1/2 acre), I will be fine. I have a 17month old son and schooling is important but still have a few years to go for that. He still craps his pants and speaks Kling-on!! :-) As for my hobbies, they include airplanes and travel and not that much into golf--although I play now and then but I would rather play frisbee golf.

Hi 95 C4 993, What kind of business venture made you pick the RTP area? I've been toying with the idea of moving my family down there as well.

A tattoo/body piercing/porn store that sells booze and lottery tickets with a Independant Porsche shop out back.

Cant comment at this point. There are target area's of the business which include other major metro area's--just so happens that the Triangle is one of them that I most likely will be involved in. Seattle and Denver also are probabilites but you follow what research points to and that be NC.

As an investment I just listed on the pre-sale and will be purchasing an apartment on a new development on Tucker Street near downtown Raleigh.

When I relocated to the Triangle in 1999 I looked at Raleigh, Wake Forest and Holly Springs and ended up in Cary. I like the central location (for commuting) and convenience (densly populated, this gives me lots of grocery shopping close by) although I don't care for the traffic during rush hours (but who does). Very low crime, nice parks, a little more upscale than Raleigh. Parts of Raleigh are excellent and Wake Forest is a fast growing and desirable area. The commute into Raleigh from WF is what turned me off of that.

Finding a home with a decent sized lot and a three car garage will be your biggest challenge, I'm afraid. Unless you're looking in the million dollar or more price range, then it shouldn't be much of a problem. :D

Good luck!

Michael
