Question Pictures of HID Ballast bracket?

Hi Everyone,

I've been desperately hunting around looking for a picture someone posted (Chris Walrod possibly?) of a homemade bracket that fits onto two existing bolts in the trunk area that you can then bolt your ballast unit to. If someone can direct me to the original listing or provide a new picture that would be great. I have 3mm aluminium sheet and some saws ready to go!

Am I correct in assuming that these bolts go onto captive nuts or am I going to hear the horrible sound of a loose bolt falling into the inside of the front wing when I take the bolts out? :-(

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

David

Man, Arena (Mike) is fast. He saw this thread and PM'ed me about it.

Anyway, yes, here is the picture (manufactured by Chris Walrod). And yes, be sure not to drop the nuts:

Caveman,

If you got the pilot kit from HIDS4u.co.uk, then you can trim the mounting plates that come with it and install like this.

Thanks Guys,

Sadly my ballast units are just a bit too big to lay flat so that I could use velcro and hence I was planning to make a bracket that I could then velcro or bolt onto.

So just to confirm the bolts used by the Chris Walrod bracket are not going into captive nuts? I.e. I have to try and not lose them behind the panel?

Jeff/Chris - does the bracket lay flat or does it need to bent at all to fit onto those two bolts?

Thanks in advance.

There is a slight longitudinal bend that you can see in the photo (right below where the wings flare out). I have mine (according to Chris) mounted on the opposite side, so it flares out. He intended for it to flare in. When I went to switch them, I played with it a bit and decided it actually fit better on my car when it flares out, thereby providing more space for the wires running behind the bracket.

Hi Jeff,

Last question. How thick would you say the aluminium is for the bracket? I bought some 3mm sheet but on reflection I think it is overkill and was thinking 15mm or 20mm would be better as I would have a chance bending or flexing it whereas what I have is very rigid (and quite heavy). Do you have a feel or does anyone have an idea what would be acceptable?

Thanks again.

I realize we're talking mm's, but I think 15mm or 20mm is thicker than 3mm.

Did you mean 1.5 or 2.0 mm?

3mm might work, although you're right, it is probably too thick (1/8" for us yanks). If you have the inclination, you could get the thinner sheets, but if you're up for a go, give the 3.0mm stuff a try.

No harm, no foul.

Hi Jeff,

Yes you are correct, 1.5mm or 2.0mm. The 3.0mm I have is rock hard and very rigid. I'm just thinking it may be a bugger to bend it if I need to flex it to fit nicely. I can get thinner pretty cheaply and easily through E-bay so I was thinking I might just order another bit.

Cheers,

David
