Default How do I get rear speaker grills off?

I need to replace the factory non-hi-fi speakers. The grills aren't popping off as I had hoped they would. They're really stuck. How do I get them off for replacement of speakers? I want to re-use the grills. I have new Infinity reference 4x6 plate speakers.

You need to take a couple screws out from the vertical side of the panel. That's the part that your back would be on if you were sitting in the back seats.
Then just lift it up and the whole folded panel will come off with the speakers. Chris

What c993k means is you have to remove the entire shelf that the rear speakers are mounted to and remove the nuts holding the speakers from the bottom. There are approx 6-8 screws that hold the rear shelf across the bottom & sides, once you have it free, tilt the shelf forward and remove the speakers.

Be careful not to damage the shelf where it connects/slides into the rear wiper grommet & assembly.

Good luck.........ZP44

I'm farther along now. As advised above, I pulled down the shelf and can get to the rear of the speakers now. However, they're not attached from below with nuts. They're screwed in from above.

The grill is the problem. It won't come off. Is there a trick someone knows? The grill must be clipped on somehow. It's not glued is it?

Not by the factory but possibly by aftermarket guys. Mine are bolted from below and are not factory speakers but do utilize the factory grills (previous owner upgraded the speakers).

Place something to protect the surface of the shelf near the speaker and pry the covers up with a wide blade screwdriver starting at the corners.

Worst case scenerio is you break one and have to use the new grills supplied with your new speakers.

Good Luck & Happy New Year........ZP44

The speakers shown have a top grille that snaps onto a plastic base plate: these two pieces sandwich the frame of the speaker, after the speaker and base plate are screwed in from the top.
Remove the grille by inserting a screwdriver in the edge notches of the top piece, and twisting - pull the screws, etc.
It is the 'Deluxe' Nokia 2-way speakers that screw in from below.

Thanks Garth. That's what I was thinking. I'm off to the garage to try what you suggest.

What speakers did you use? Did you also replace the speakers in the doors?

I'm thinking about replacing my speakers just they are 11 years old, but my hearing is so bad I can't justify audiophile quality.

He used 4x6 plate (separate tweater) speakers. Infinity makes a good set, as does Polk - both at reasonable prices (check www.crutchfield.com). Note you need to get 4 ohm speakers.
