I think that you are right that Rennlisters are emotional about these cars, but I think that it results in a factual, measurable result -- we seek out and purchase the very best out there (the other 30%).
The top 30% of 993s have characteristics like the following:
- 1 or 2 owners
- low mileage, but hyper maintained mechanically
- all original equipment, unmolested
- popular color combinations
- full documented history
- no collision or paint repair whatsoever
- cosmetically perfect, with minimal wheel rash or paint nicks, etc.
- more
So I think that I agree with you that Excellence is accurate for average cars, but I dont agree that they reflect the prices of more perfect specimens... not just a rennlist thing -- check out the highline dealers and what they are asking (and getting) for the top cars, also ebay, also autotrader, etc.

Jonathan,
Your top 30% is exactly the criteria I would and did apply in finding my '97 (if 50K miles is "low mileage"). I bought it from a Porsche dealer in the Chicago area for $32.6K which as I recall is below Excellence's excellent but quite a ways above their low. And I agree that Excellence or any market survey for that matter can't account for all of the details that go into establishing a fair price for a car. Bruce Anderson hedges with his "beyond excellent" classification (which he doesn't price of course) and I certainly have seen cars described on this forum that would fall in the beyond excellent category.

Your scenario is unusual but 50K miles is not low. I have 17K on mine.
I have no doubt whatsoever that I could sell my car for $60K...a number comfirmed by Alfie (see above) many times.

I think that lower mileage, pristine examples, which command the highest dollar, may also be the slowest sell, because it takes an appreciative buyer, but for the right car, the money will come. The only problem i see at all with the original car in question is its model year. It is simply not the last of the aircooled cars, and for 60whatever thousand dollars, it should be.
my 993 has 53k on it now, when i bought it 4.5 years ago, it had 18k. it had low mileage then. Currently, i dont care if you call it low or not, it gets sold as a really nice driver, not a spectacular example.

Just searched Autotrader. Under 30k miles 96-98, 48 cars came up, all types except Turbos and this is what came up with for what people are asking right now:
$69,500 Highest price
$39,270 Lowest price
$54,179 Average price
$69,500 Highest price
$39,270 Lowest price
$54,179 Average price

right so "truly selling" is probably not the right language.. great example of where people "wish these cars were truly selling"... not that they won't sell for that, but, that hasn't happened yet.

What are your intension regarding the car - are you going to drive it 1000 miles a year or 10000? If you are going to drive it a lot then pass on this one and get one for less $$$ and more miles - there are good out there with 60 -80 k miles and they are just getting broken in at that point. Having said all that - I think the realistic price would be in the low 50's. Good luck!
