Looking for a 993....

Hello all. I have lurked for some time, but this is my inaugural post. Being a past owner of a 944 turbo, I have long lusted for a 911, and have decided that now is the time. My choices have come down to either a 2002-2003 turbo, or a 1996-1997 993. For several reasons that I will not bore you with, I am now leaning towards the 993. My question to all of you good people is the following -

1) Much that I have read has told me that a nice 96-97 non turbo 911 should sell somewhere in the range of 32-42k. However, my latest trolls of ebay and auto trader in my area (NYC metro) reveals that many are going for high 40s to mid 50s! Is this real normal range, or are these buyers just delusional. I dont mind paying a premium for condition or low miles, but this range seems way out of whack in what I am reading.

2) Other than the standard PPI and wiring harness questions, is there anything that I absolutely need to be aware of pre-purchase?

3) My current daily driver is a Jetta TDI, which I plan to sell if I buy the Porsche. Is there any problem with the idea of a 993 as a daily driver. (I take public transportation to work, so the miles should be <10,000 per annum).

4) Does anyone know of a good 993 in my area for sale that is worth a look?

Thx in advance for any help.

Take a look at these links.

Remember that "asking price" is sometimes alot different than "selling price". Those that are over-priced are not selling. Find one you like and make a reasonable offer.

To answer your questions about what to look for in a PPI, check out the recent thread about the Excellence article. It covers all the bases.

Good Luck!
Jim

993 C4 for sale

I have a '96 C4 with 42,000 for sale. Black/Black. If interested, it is listed at www.neoautos.com.

Wow - thx for all the PMs everyone. I should have been more specific when I posted I suppose.

The car I am looking for will have the following characteristics -

1996 or 1997
Coupe or Cabrio.
6 speed
Less than 50k
Close enough that I can drive before buying
Flexible on colors - but no yellow, red, or anything flamboyant (eg - electric blue)

With winter coming, I am willing to wait till after the snow to get the one I want. But these are my general criteria.

Thx again everyone.

Get a C4. I haven't driven mine in snow yet but the way it handles wet roads is astonishing and promises good results in the white stuff.

for the most part, very well maintained 96-98 993s will sell from the 40s on up well into 50s for pristine examples

Lots of cars that meet your criteria out there so take your time and find the one that's best for you. With the miles your looking for I would think high 30s to mid 40s on a narrow body is in the ball park. From my experience last year, I think this can be a good time to pick one up. Lots of folks getting ready to take them off the road this time of year and thinking about getting something new for next season. I'll give you the report in a few months on how they do in the snow Thaddeus. Should be an interesting winter.

my sense is that these cars are almost impossible to find in the 30s with low mileage great condition...96-97... where are you seeing those years with low mileage in the 30s?

Jonathan, I spent some time doing research to follow up. My reference point for hight 30s is a few 95s I've seen in that range with low miles. You are indeed correct that the 96-97s seem to command in the 40s+ with low miles. It also seems that finding a NB is a little tougher than it's wider S brother in those years also. Thanks for the pushback. Don't want to give bad info.

Market check

I picked up my '97 Cab in May for $37k. Very clean car and very clean PPI. I don't think I would pay anything north of 40k for a 8-9 grade 993 from the model years you want. Be patient. But also do not buy on miles alone. Mine had 43k on the clock but had a new clutch and various upgrades and was well maintained. These cars need to be driven. I drive mine daily (about 60 miles) and always smile.

Good Luck.

Both of my PCars are over the 100,000 mile mark and humming along like little bees going about thier business. Both have new clutches done by previous owner but otherwise stock (until I got to them - I don't by grade 8+ cars because I'd be too worried to drive them... :roflmao: ).

Have fun.. I hope you find what you want. This should be a good time of year to buy these things... hell.. around here they are are *almost* giving them away. :roflmao:
