Poser ?
I have seen people on this forum refer to others as being a "poser" in a derogatory manner. What exactly constitutes being a poser?

Maybe someone who would buy a new Porsche? I think the word is mentioned often in memos between Porsche and their ad agency.
Or, how about someone who doesn't change their own oil?
Or someone who has chrome wheels?
Or use the riceboy definition: what's the "Type-R" badge of the Porsche world? A turbo tail on a non-turbo? S badging on a narrow body? 18" wheels with Nitto tires?

It is slang for the french word "Poseur" , not "authentic" or "wannabee" in English.
If you want the full official meaning...here it is... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poseur

Here is one definition from "Jargon File":
poser
n. A wannabee; not hacker slang, but used among
crackers, phreaks and warez d00dz. Not as negative as lamer or
leech. Probably derives from a similar usage among punk-rockers
and metalheads, putting down those who "talk the talk but don't walk
the walk".

so the word "poser" in the Porsche world is the same as, let's say, someone who would wear hip hop clothings (to avoid getting beat up in their neighborhood) but actually listening to Metallica, Godsmack, System of Down, etc...right?

I guess if you can afford to be a poser; you're not one.

must been cheaper to alter it than buying one...hehehehehe!
