The term poser (or poseur) has been in general use in the UK (where I grew up..) for decades.
It would be used correctly in describing someone who, say, slapped a turbo badge on their non-turbo car...Though I have also heard it used to describe someone who is simply perceived to be making a special effort to attract attention to themselves, by say..driving an expensive German sports car...
(edit:TD in DC nailed it!!!)

TD in DC, how about this variation:

Guy #1 with the fake GT3 shows up at a track day/time trial. Guy #2, a richer guy with a real GT3 shows up too, looking distainfully at the fake. Then the guy in the replica thoroughly beats the guy in the real one.

Who's the poseur?

Ahhhaahhhhaahh kemo sabe . . . they are BOTH poseurs, albeit poseurs in a different manner.

Don't mess with the brilliance that is TD in DC For the humor challenged in the bunch, I am being 100% sarcastic.

In a way, most of us here are poseurs driving cars on the street out of which we cannot extract 50% of the performance meanwhile worrying about sway bars and their settings, pss9, best street tire, etc.

But that's ok. To each his own.

And then there is the reverse poseur who takes his 930, reinstalls narrow flares on it and puts a simple "912" emblem on the back... (Talk about sand-bagging)

P.S. This is extremely rare, becaue the blue flames coming out of the tailpipe on upshifts kind of gives him away...

A poser is anyone who installs :

An imitation blow off valve:
Yes, its true... http://www.takakaira.com/accessories...ightpager.html

An LED exhaust pipe:

or

Drilled brake rotor "simulators":

Personally, I am thinking about getting one of those blow off valve simulators. Much cheaper than those pesky turbos.

When I was a kid and skateboarded a lot, we called a person a poser who had the nicest and most expensive boards but didn't actually know how to ride or bother to learn. They just did it to be cool. I always thought it was because it was like they were posing with the board (poser = one who poses), but I guess the term actually dates back further. Hmm.

A person who generally buys something to flatter their ego is a poser. These days anyone one can become a poser for practically nothing with all the fake stuff on the market-purses, wallets, and aftermarket car parts.

The men or women who see wearing a fake (like you can tell the difference) Rolex or carrying a Dolce and Gabanna purse, look like a million bucks, and then get into a 15 year car that looks like a pig pen. Thats a poser.

I know some extremely wealthy individuals who fit this description to a tee. Does that make them bizarro poseurs?
