Two-for-one resistor fiesta!
After weeks of putting off the inevitable, fellow 993 owner, Neil, and I decided to replace our oil cooler fan resistors. Following Toga's clear instructions, we dove into the project. It's certainly not as difficult, as say retrieving soil samples from Jupiter, but it's also not super easy. Unbolting items for access and actually replacing the resistor is not terribly difficult, but maneuvering the oil cooler slightly out of the way proved rather taxing.
But it proved to be a worthwhile exercise, as both of our resistors were obviously defective. Everything else nestled in these hidden areas appeared healthy, so we backtracked and closed the wheel wells again. I took a bit more time and replaced the original fuel filter as well.
Inquisitive by nature, Neil decided to open the driver's side wheel well only to discover a cracked A/C fan resistor ... So our next DIY day is already in the works Enjoy the carnage.
Ready for surgery:
Exploration started:

The mighty resistor (on the rotor):

Hardest part is the oil cooler side, if your Carrera is a tiptronic.
A tiptronic has the gearbox radiator stuck to the oilcooler, and hard to move.
I did both sides without removing the front bumper
I would highly recommend removing the bumper.
Andreas, did you install the new version resistor, with the heat spreader?

Andreas, I was noticing your trumpet horns, did you do that upgrade at some earlier point? I need better horns, my stock one is anemic.
Congrats on your successful effort to "brave new worlds"

Mike,
Things are very tight in there. The biggest hurdle was figuring out how to dislodge the oil cooler from the two pins that it rests on. Removing the two 13mm nuts that partially serve to hold the black steel mounting bracket certainly helped. Having two more hands was the biggest help!
Piper,
I tend to always jack my car from the engine case and from the front middle in order to rest it securely on all four designated points. In this case, we chose two stout subframe mounting points aft of the steering rack area. Plenty strong. I also use flat-topped AC stands, so there is no chance of marring or damaging anything under there.
geolab,
The new resistors came with a metal disc - I presume that is what you mean.
David,
Certainly!
fbfisher,
The trumpet horns are stock to my early '95. I read somewhere that these were discontinued at some point in the 993's lifespan. They are plenty loud

Yes Andreas, the metal disc is the heat spreader.
Fred, the trumpet horns are OEM part numbers:
911 635 101 20 High tone fanfare
911 635 102 20 Low tone fanfare
The real porsche horns.
prob is they come expensive, about $100 for both

I'm intrigued. Where did you put your jack stands? I though they could only go under the jacking points themselves. Obviously you've found another place.

Love the AC stands, I have them too. I too found that moving the oil cooler off of the two pins was a bitch. It was harder than it should have been because I was afraid of breaking something. I found I really needed to put some weight behind it. The AC side looks like a pain mainly because you don't have much maneuvering room and can't see what you are doing.

Gee you could have swung by and helped me install my RS carpet set. It's a real PITA working around the cage. Only a couple more things to get done for the club race.
