CEL - Mechanic recommends...
I've owned this 97 993 C2 for a year now and all of sudden after putting 4K miles (currently has 74K miles) the CEL came on. I took it to the mechanic and reported that I have the1411 code - SAI (passenger side). He reset it and came back in about a week. He recommended to perform the following:
R/R Engine & Trans
R/R Heads for Cleaning & Recon
Replace Cyclinder head Studs
Recondition Heads w/guides, etc
6 EXH Valves
Gasket Set
Cyl Head Studs
Clutch
Can some make heads or tails on what these above service is he planning to perform in this rebuild? Are they all necessary? He did inform me that the 1411 code will not impact performance of the vehicle but will need to be done before my next emission test. Looking for any other suggestion to get over this EXPENSIVe hump.

A topend rebuild will surely solve the clogged port, but may be completely unnecesary. If your oil comsumption is within spec and you don't have excessive valve play, then I'd question why a topend is required. If you are a DIYer, you can replace the SAI check valve and flush the ports yourself for several hundred dollars and typically several days work. A search will help you find many relevant threads here as well as the DIY on www.p-car.com.
If you're not a DIYer, some shops will also perform this flush, typically charging in the $1K range. Still, that's better than a $5-6K rebuild.
Good luck!

Try to find a shop that has successful experience with the SAI flush and go that route.

Is there any other reason he suggested a top end overhaul other than the SAI fault code. If not..he is probably taking you to the cleaners. The DIY is time consuming but fun

SAI Flush - Anyone in Portland, Oregon
Thanks everyone for all your replies and suggestions. I really appreciate it. Can anyone recommend a Mechanic that would perform the SAI flush around the Portland, Oregon metropolitan?
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

the flush is a good place to start, but if the ports are really plugged up it will not work. if it doesn't work, and you need a valve job in the end then you just added another $1k to your bill (if it does work, you will have saved a lot of $).
