Default OT: Bike rack for Audi

Before the flames start - yes, I did just read through the bike rack thread!

What I'm asking, is what would people suggest for a 2-bike rack for my Audi S4? Roof or hitch-style? Where would people recommend getting a hitch installed? What size? (1.25" or 2") I'm not planning on towing anything at the present time, but would want to keep the options open should a wave-runner suddenly appear... Also, I may eventually want to haul snowboards.
TIA

I would go the roof route. My wife's car has the Thule set-up and my truck has the hitch mount. The hitch mount is a pain although you might still be able to open the trunk without moving the bikes. A downside to both assuming you are hauling bikes: getting rear ended with the trailer hitch (bikes block the brakelights) and driving into the garage with roof mounts. My wife has managed to do both!

Good luck in your search. Both Thule, Yakima and Rocky Mounts make great equipment.

Thanks for the input. Through an Audi forum I found out about a trailer hitch that fits the S4 "perfectly" and still looks pretty stealth. The only issue for me is wher to get it installed - suggestions?

I would definitely get it installed. That trailer hitch for the S4 is a pain to put on. I have had a few S4's (always Avants) and have always gone for the roof rack but then with an Avant I get the roof rails to attach the rack to.

When I was in the US and had a Saab convertible I used a Thule two bike rack that fittend on the back onto a trailer hitch but when I wasn't using the bike rack you could barely notice that there was a hitch socket. You dno't need to get it wired up so there is little to see. Big advantage was that you could get the bikes easily and you could still open the boot (trunk).

Cheers,

David

Thanks to everyone for their help - I've ended up ordering the Da'Lan hitch and Thule 2-bike rack.
Now all I have to do is figure out where to get it installed. Dealer passed on the job but the highly rated local independent shop for Porsche, etc. (ReidVann) said they "could" do it but have not installed hitches. My biggest worry has to do with the 4 holes that will need to be drilled through the body into the spare-wheel well and the potential for water leaks & corrosion.
Anyone have any suggestions re: the install?
