Public-domain OBD1 PCB board - ORDER HERE

4 Attachment(s)
3/3/2007 - I'm leaving this thread because of all the information it contains, but I've removed the Round 1 group buy details. The Round 2 group buy thread is here:

The circuit was designed by Ray (raycm) and it interfaces via computer serial port to scanning software made by Doug (dougb). I did the PCB layout, again with help from Ray.

Details

Details on what this is and how it works can be found here:

Ray's 1995
OBD 1 Diag Tool
thread

Laurence's Diag Interface and Software thread

Ray's DIY 1995 OBD 1 scantool thread (Edit - added 8/31/06)

This board works for OBD1-equipped 993s, and 964s with small modifications which can be found in the 964 thread. You can reset codes and read values from the DME, Alarm, Brake system, etc. There is obviously no warranty of any kind, and no liability will be assumed by any participants if you damage your car, computer, or self. However, there are assembled circuits working on both 964s and 993s (including mine) right now.

What you will get

One envelope sent via USPS, containing one BARE printed circuit board. Components are not included.

Board specs:

-Copper traces are 0.025"
-All traces are on the top side
-There is copper lettering indicating part numbers, resistor values, transistor types, etc.
-There is no silkscreen layer
-All holes are plated through, making it easy to solder component leads to either the top or the bottom of the board
-This board should be easy to assemble if you have some previous soldering experience. Components are not spaced particularly closely. Plan on around 2-4 hours of soldering and assembly depending on your experience level.

Price
Price is $26 per board, including shipping to your address in the 48 states only. You will need to obtain the components in the BOM (Bill of Materials, below) and also DougB's diagnostic software.

BOM
C1 0.1uF 25 Volt (such as VishayA104K15X7RF5TAA or K104Z15Y5VE5TL2)

Im in - I will need one board and will send $26 on paypal when you are ready. Thx for putting this together.

whatyoutalknaboutwillis 08-21-2006 01:53 PM

Me too. Thanks for all the work.

DerkBarrington 08-21-2006 02:43 PM

I'm in as well, provided you will ship to canada

Jeff96-993 08-21-2006 03:05 PM

I know nothing about OBD-1... is this reader specific to the 1995 993 or is there a chance it would work on other OBD-1 cars?

RallyJon 08-21-2006 03:05 PM

If this is the only way it comes, I'm in. If there'll be a source for an assembled and tested version, I'd much prefer that.

cowtown 08-21-2006 03:08 PM

Rally-
Chris Walrod offered to assemble - you should probably ping him and see if you can arrange some sort of assembly line. I'd like to help with assembly, but have used up so much time doing the PCB that I need to take a break from it for a bit.

Jeff-The DougB software is specific to the Porsche OBD. The circuit might or might not work with other models and appropriate software. Try asking raycm (who designed the circuit) in the 993 thread.

Yessir, I can help with assy. In a few days, I can assemble a kit of components to offer as well. These components are best bought in quantity. Buying in bulk will save everyone money. Stay tuned.

If the PCB is ordered panelized (they precut the boards for you and you have 8"x11" to work with) you can get 8 boards per panel and 2 panels sell for $48USD, 4 panels $78USD, 10 panels $138USD. Double-sided with plated through holes are $78USD, $128USD and $218USD. Shipping 1lb Fedex from Malaysia is only $12USD. We just need to email them a standard Gerber file or I can transfer the schematic to Cadsoft Eagle, etc.

Yikes !! I'm not in the 52 states !! I can do Paypal for PCB + postage , tho' ...

please ?? and again thanks for all the effort !!

cheers, Maurice

Hi Chris,

I'm in for a fully assembled device. Let me know if you need any unskilled help, running errands, whatever, to get this done. I'm not too far away, in Redlands.

That's a great deal. If you're willing to take over the logistics and mailing, I'm all for going this route. The $26 figure is using a small proto supplier and is very high.

We don't need plated holes or double layer.

Let me know via PM if I can email you the files I have.

Colin

I'll take 1 please.

Thanks for making this happen.

98993c2s 08-21-2006 05:45 PM

That's a pretty simple board, lots of express shops can do that for a buck a piece or even less, but they need to be panelized so the board shop doesn't have to throw away excess.

Bill Verburg 08-21-2006 05:45 PM

I'm in for an assembled one.
