This may seem like a sorta lame question but it should give some idea if 993's may hold reasonable value going forward given the latest 911's being produced by Porsche. I wonder if most of us are driving 993's because of them being the last of the hand built air cooled cars, or if most of us drive them because even though 996's are withing reach financially, 996's don't get most of us fired up (my sentiments being the latter). I think I'd go get a 997 GT3 as my ultimate choice in P-cars if money was absolutely no object just because I think they are really cool. A C-GT seems too over-the-top for anything but a weekend driver or for track days. Way too much $$$ to tie up in a car unless you're a gazillionaire anyway. So how many of you guys really would prefer to have a 997 over your 993? I have a good friend who tends to upgrade garage queens every 2 years or so and his 997 will be available to me in about 18 months. I have no idea how reliable or how well built they are compared to the 993's but I know that the performance exceeds 993's. So who wants the "7" over the "3"?

I still prefer the combo of Air + simplicity with the 993.
997s while beautiful, still have too much gadgetry for my liking. Not here for a luxury ride.
Gotta say....saw one tonight (in the dark) from a distance and it looked a liiiiiiiitttlllle bit like a VW beetle with the HIDs on .... as Ali G would say, "no disrespec".... it just did.

Hi Matt (do I remember your name correctly? I'm terrible with names),
I will not go with the 997S and yes, I can easily afford it. However, I'm quite unique that I drive a RUF, and the 997 lines (may be including the tt) cannot offer better performance and driving fun. So there goes the urge to splurge.
However, I may well buy a Cayman as a daily driver. I think it is a fun car on the streets. It is more practical than the RUF as it is much more readily replaceable (I loose the RUF, will NEVER be able to get another one like it). I can park it anywhere. It is much cheaper to run, and I don't care about door dings or other abuse on a Cayman. I just baby my RUF too much. Don't get me wrong, I do 12k+ miles on the RUF last year, with it just being a pleasure car. I just am very particular about when and where I drive it.

I would like to add a 997 to my garage without question, esp a 997 GT3. But to give up my baby to do it..... I just couldn't. I've thought numerous time about selling my 993 to get a GT3 but everytime I do I get butterflies in my stomach.
My GF summed it up best the first time see saw my 993. She said "that is the sexiest car I've ever seen". I mean come on how can I give that up!

I actually prefer the humble, simple, antiquated, prehistoric 993 over the shiny, expensive, too perfect 997. Nothing wrong with the 997, it's just that I like to tell people (when they comment on my 993):
"This ole thing? It's over 10 years old and is worth no more than your new SUV!"
I personally don't want to be driving a newish $80k car. I'd worry about it abd it's rapid depreciation too much. I bought my 993 about 4 years ago for $40500 and it's worth close to that now!

The 993 is just so much better looking in my book. I went into a dealer when the 996 came out and I was really turned off by it...water cooled? Yuck.
Im sure they are great cars but the classic round eyes of the 993 are far too cool.
If money were no object I'd buy a Carrera GT and a cherry 993 to park right beside it.

993 hands down. Not an issue of affordability, just a need for soul.

I am biased because I am picking up my 997 TT tomorrow.
For the track, a 993, no question, hands down.. For street and daily use, 997.. Lets face it, as great as the 993 is, it doesn't have a lot of modern convienences. not having cup holders, etc, SUCKS.. And no Nav system, crappy headlights, etc.
I would not want to drive my 993 to vegas from LA.. It just doesn't have the comfort and convienences. I much prefer my X5 for drives.
The 997 is a ton of fun to drive but also has a lot of nice features. It's a bit bigger and more comfortable. it might be a better traffic sitter, road trip car.
So, my verdict is, keep both.
993 is work to drive but very rewarding
997 is easier to be in and drive and is still rewarding..

Much as I love my car, I'd trade it for a 997GT3 or 997S in a heartbeat.......
What will probably happen in about 5 years is me picking up a 997GT3 to go with the 993. (I hope).

for now the 993 is perfect.....still modern enough to perform.... and the driving pleasure, the looks, the sound etc can't be equalled by any new car... 997 included.
next porsche will be a 997 though.....but not for atleast 2 years I reckon. Couldn't afford new, would be looking at a 2 year old model.

I almost bought a 997s for pickup in Germany but they wanted an extra 10g's to hold until you bring it back to the states which can be months. That and I'm impatient and wanted my car sooner than waiting till my fall vacation. It would have been a mistake seeing the new GT3 and the GT3 RS. The 997 I configured was more than the GT3 base price... I love my 993 but the new GT3 really looks like something special.

As nice as the 997 is, it doesn't really float my boat, at least not enough to replace the 993 with. If I were to get a 997, it would be a 997 cup car. If I were to replace the 993, it would be with a 964 cup car or maybe an older turbo.
