Default My 1995 NA to turbo project progress

Wanted to start off by thanking the Rennlist forums for all the great info, couldn’t have gotten this far otherwise. I decided to change my screen name from buckeye19, so I will be paying my membership dues soon under my new account. I've been working on the car for a few months and finally got it road worthy this past weekend. So here are a few in progress pics, I will take some more of the car tonight.

Bone stock back in December when I purchased it:

Turbo mounted up (car is much cleaner now):
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...299_3_full.jpg

Manifold, exhaust, and intercooler piping all done:
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...299_6_full.jpg

Better picture of the intercooler:

I am on stock internals only running 5 psi for now. The built motor, oil cooling, driveline, and fuel system upgrades will get done over the winter. I am very pleased so far, the car drives great and it sounds as amazing as I had hoped. There is still much to do, I plan on getting the exhaust plumbing ceramic coated and polishing the intercooler/ IC pipes as well. Just figured you guys would enjoy the pictures of the project so far.

Here is the basic mods list to date:

Garrett GT4088 turbo
Tial 44mm wastegate
3” exhaust with straight through muffler
Custom intercooler with 23.5” x 11.75” x 3” core
3” aluminum intercooler piping, Greddy type-R BOV
AEM EMS standalone (Speed density based, no MAF)
Custom jumper harness that plugs into factory DME harness
Custom coil on plug ignition setup driven by 2 AEM CDI boxes
Clewett engineering distributor hole blockoff
Clewett engineering cam sensor mount
Clewett engineering fan shroud blockoff
New engine harness
RS fan pulley
Powdercoated fan and housing
H&R springs
SSR GT3 wheels
Better bodies front splitter (really poor fitment)
Better bodies fog light brake ducts
MA shaw TT rear wing
Vertex 4300K HID’s

Thanks for reading!

Hi Brett,

Thanks for sharing. That looks pretty hardcore! What are you doing to the bodywork to cover up the turbo/exhaust as it all seems to stick out quite a lot?

Cheers,

David

What Aem model are you using?

Thanks, Tony

David, everything fits (barely) behind the stock rear bumper. I'll get pictures of it tonight with all the bodywork back on it.

Tony, I'm using the universal EMS, part number 30-1900.

Wow! I'm surprised; what about heat though? I guess it's a case of making sure that no-one tail-ends you!

Cheers,

David

I've just noticed that you are in Columbus. I work for Reed Elsevier that owns LexisNexis (in Dayton). If I get some time next time I'm visiting them I'd love to see your car.

Cheers,

David

That looks awesome. What kind of power output are you expecting?

I put about 100 miles on it this weekend, no heat issues so far.

The turbo is the only thing close to the bumper. That's why the turbine housing has that nice thick insulating blanket around it in the last 2 pictures. The bumper itself also still has the factory heat shields in place. Don't forget that the turbo now resides where the catalytic converter used to sit, which got plenty hot as well. Let me know when your in town David, I’ll gladly take you for a spin.

FisterD, I have a pretty good idea what I think it will make as it sits, but I don't want to make any claims so I'll put it on the dyno soon. From what I have read here the stock rods/bolts will only handle 380-400 rear wheel hp max, so I will be sure to stay below that until the built motor is finished.

Brett,

Looks great! Thanks for posting and please keep us in the loop as you progress. Do you have any plans for the body work (e.g. GT2 conversion) or are you keeping it a sleeper?

Regards,

The third photo is by far the most beautiful sight I've ever seen! Let us know the progress.

How about having a clear polycarbonate deck lid and rar bumper fabricated?

Very very cool. I've been thinking about fab'ing something like that too. My brother's twin exhaust mounted turbos got me thinking.

Cy, I will probably leave the body as it is in the pictures below. The car has no chance at sleeper status anyway as soon as the engine fires up. Thanks for the compliments Andreas. It is a shame to hide all the goodies behind body parts. Some clear bumper and deck pieces would definitely be original.

Here are some more pictures. It was easier to just drop the engine out to do some of the work. So here it is all cleaned up just before it went back in:

Here are a few exterior shots I took today showing the body mods, the car is a little dusty in these:

Goodie goodie gum drops! That set up is vicious! Do you do all of the fabrication? Can you post more pictures of the piping and manifold up close? Who did the AEM re-wiring? Good job looks so good in that rear shot.

Very nice! Did you do anything to the engine internals? There are items such as rod bolts that may take one some real stresses since you are adding more than 100HP. The stock compression is also fairly high...how are you handling the increased effective compression ratio?

And I guess this is a silly question but, with all the time, effort and costs to modify this car would it have not been easier and more reliable to buy a 993 Turbo?

Best of luck!

Cheers,

Mike
