Great job Brett!

That's a real sleeper... I'll give you a shout next time I'm out that way if time allows.

Cheers,

David

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I did all of the fabrication, wiring, and tuning work myself. I have access to a nice shop to work in, and I have some decent experience working with modded cars.

Mike, I plan on doing the built motor over the winter, using your awesome write-up as a guide of course. I will run low boost and not push it past 450 flywheel hp for now, I believe the stock rods and rod bolts will be ok for those levels based on what I have read here so far (comments made by Geoffrey). If anybody has different experiences please speak up! I have also taken measures through tuning, monitoring both knock sensors, etc, to make sure that knock will not be a problem at the low boost levels I'm currently running.

It did take quite a bit of time, but building projects like this is sort of a hobby that keeps me out of trouble. I just did it in my spare time on weekends or in the evenings over the last 4 months. It really didn’t take that much money though since this is a fairly simple setup (one turbo, one inexpensive IC, one wastegate, simple exhaust, etc). This is a very clean one owner car with 54K miles on it, I can assure you that I am nowhere near the cost of what it would take to buy a stock TT with this condition/mileage.

I wanted a lightweight RWD car, and I wanted the ability to reach higher power levels then what the stock TT internals/turbos/etc could have handled. So most of the goodies that make the TT worth all the extra $$ would have probably been upgraded anyway. That and I have the satisfaction of building it myself.

Yeah...my thoughts exactly... I'm still trying to convince myself that I can do my own brakes...

If one can program the immoblizer, they can do anything.

Here’s another intersting tidbit. I had read that some of the early 95’s got the 964 style cam gears. So I was happy to see it was true when I replaced the chain cover gaskets.

Nice work brett.

Concerning rod bolts, they can withstand real 500FWHP all day long, that would be about 500RWHP on the typical chassis dyno.. Th ekey here is to have good programming, meaning running the car within good AFRs and limit detonation. Another area of trouble might be your head sealing, again up to 500FWHP you are safe.

Based on the maps I checked, and since your base is a N/A engine, it seems that the GT40 would be good for about 500-520FWHP depending on what A/R you have. I guess you just need to make sure you run decently rich fuel levels and don't go wild on boost with your high stock compression. Lag should be limited as a result of your compression ratios and the BB turbo efficiency, should be fun to drive!

If I were to be a bit critic, I would say that the intake path to the turbo is a bit too long...but no big deal.

I really applaud your initiative, thanks for sharing, and good luck.

Thanks for the further info Brett. Any idea how early the 993 needs to be? I have a 993 registered in Jan 1995 so presumably it was built in late 1994. What do you reckon are my chances of having the better cam gears?

Cheers,

David

I am not sure about the gear set but I know my 96 Targa with a build date of March has the 964 keyways in the cams...that is the hard part if you backdate the cam sprockets. As far as "better" there is no difference in power etc. except they will not slip on the cam and you can use the old fasioned methods to time the cams.

Cheers,

Mike

Gentlemen, if I can say one thing about Brett's car... the sound defies description... as if Satan declared Stuttgart the portal to hell and built Brett's car to show some home town pride... John Force would have inklings of doubt trickling into his mind as this thing rolled up... the biggest problem Brett's gonna have is that his ~400WHP sounds like ~1500 and no one will want to run him...

"Sleeper" will become it's own irony as adversaries will develop insomnia after the encounters...

To bring up the crass subject of economics- how much would you estimate in parts cost and manhours? Just ballpark.
