0 weight is only thinner in the "winter", i.e. temps at 0C or below, hence the "W". Certainly 40 would be thinner than 50 in warm/hot conditions.

In street-only driving since last oil change, only used about 1/3 qt in 3000 mi, with the "gold cap" 15w50, and now nearly 67K on the odo.

I wouldnt compare results from that of a wet-sump based oiling system with a capacity limited to about half of the 993. Many reasons, but in a nutshell, dry sump systems will de-aerate much more efficiently help prevent much of the foaming reported by your contact.

I've been using the gold cap stuff in the Turtle for about 6 months. I use the Turtle exclusively for track - about 50/50 for DE/race and have spent about 15 days at the track since the switch. I've had the oil system checked twice in that time to ensure no issues with the new engine. All is fine. In addition, since the new engine was built, I use/burn less than 1 quart of oil in a normal race weekend.

I'm happy with the gold top stuff.

o.k. that is more reassuring to hear

...so does anyone know if it is 'o.k.' to mix the red top and gold top in an oil change?

Mobil claims that its the same formulation except the gold has more of the same additives giving it "extended performance". Based on that statement, I would say that its ok to mix since the qty of additives has changed. The only caveat is that you will not be able to claim "extended performance" rather "kinda sorta extended performance..."

I have been using the gold cap Mobil 1 for about 15 track days...2 oil changes, and have seen no differences from the red cap stuff i used for years. I also saw no issues when i mixed the red and gold prior to the first all gold oil change.

BTW, I had a mechanic (now ex-mechanic) put 0-40 Mobile 1 in my car by mistake about a year ago. I wouldn't have known if my consumption at the track had not gone from 1/2 quart per 2 day event to 1 1/2 quarts + per 2 day event. When I checked the shop records, I found the mistake. They did a free change to 15-50W, and I have been back to the 1/2 quart rate ever since. Others have reported no change in their consumption though.

There is not an ounce of truth to the "Gold cap bad/Red cap good rumor"...the Gold cap is simply the next generation of M1 chemistry and a heavier duty dditive package....that said, you should be using a 0w40 or 5w40 for a 993.

I called Mobil last year with that question and the technical dept said that you can mix Mobil 1 with any oil without adverse affects,
Not only another Mobil 1 and not only Synth oil, It mixes well with any oil and any viscosity between 0-50. Chris

I have been using 15W-50 forever, in South Florida it get's HOT!
That said I would like to try a 5W40 to prevent start up wear but with the daily temperatures being in the 90+ I feel a bit safer with the 15W-50.

Here we go again. I searched thru the archive and it seems most agree that 15w50 is what the 993 needs, and that's what I have been using... I use 0w40 for my 996.

I don't think any of us can genaralize the answer to this. I find it depends on the use of the car. All I know is that my 993, driven about 90-95% on track hard and put up wet, often in hot temps, uses very little oil with 15W50. Drinks up the 0W40. YMMV.

o.k. thank you everyone

...has anyone considered that true race oil has ZERO detergents (and has to be changed right away) vs. 37% more additives? ..I wonder if this can cause any issues down the road for DE track days.

Anyone with a chemical oil background able to comment here?

You don't need it; use 0W-40.

Have 93K miles on the Porsche; even at the track it's happy with this. Consumption is 3K miles/qt and have no leaks.

Try it and check your oil pressure. If you don't like it, can switch back.

(P.S. - car will have more power due to lower pumping losses. Don't you want a faster car?)
