I can't think of a better way to burn gas than reving my 993 over 4500!! If you are going to go, do it with a big bang and not a whimper!

FWIW, in Chile its U$4.71 a US gallon equiv. of 97 oct. And yes, a lot of it is tax, fortunatelly in $/M3 and not ad valorem.

Sure a lot of countries pay more per gallon than we do here in the US. But we have oil right here. We refine it right here. All the hubbub about drilling in Alaska should not be about the drilling but the fact (to my understanting) is that most if not all of that oil is slated to be sold overseas to the highest bidder. A prime steak dinner in Japan is more expensive than it is here in the US too. Why? I 'm sure it's because we have a leg up on the cattle ranch idea (not to mention the real estate to support it). It's all about money, and the rich in this country are bound and determine to get richer even if it means us working guys have to support them on our backs. I'm sorry but I don't see why we have to pay over $3.00 a gallon when Exxon and the rest are posting billions of dollars of profits every three months. Total BS

i live in Venezuela and i think is NOT fear for you , and for most of the countries the pricing of the gas right now. It is an abuse. many countries just can not pay the price. Also, we , the people that live here, never see that money ...
politians do ... not us ....

I paid Euro 1.44 for 100 octane in Germany last week.

85 liters for the Porker = Well over $150. Not cheap.

My solution? I bought a s*** load of Chevron last year.

For Terry Adams: FWIW, I was in Italy last summer and received a speeding ticket by mail 9 months later!!! They are cracking down on foreign plates... however, their locals are by far the worst drivers on earth or is it Greecve or France or somewhere in Africa??

It's closer to US$1.80 per litre in HK; which is around US$6.80 a gallon.

I think over 50% is in govt duties/taxes.

Where abouts does he live? I'm from a wee town called Nairn up in the north, if any of you are golfers, you would love it up there, two championship quality courses in a town of 10000 people!

Accroding to CNBC today, apparently there is a global "protein surplus"- perhaps we (in the NW Hemisphere) can trade protein for hydrocarbons.

I'm actually living in Hong Kong although I keep my 98 cab and a few other things in LA. In HK I keep a white 1994 993 cab and that's US$ to fill it...almost US$7 a gallon here

Sorry, I'm going to disagree on this. As a nation, we import ~40% of crude, and of that, <10% from any one nation (and <10% from the entire M.East, and something like <10% from Venezuela, Canada, and Africa ...Nigeria, I think ). It is not any one given country or region screwing us. It is worldwide consumption increasing and worldwide production not keeping up proportionally.

And as for Exxon and the industry at large, they have been probed, investigated, audited over and over again over the decades ...no malfeasance that the FTC or others can find ...or make stick. You'd think any egregious profiteering would be noticible as in, oh, Enron, WorldCom, Anderson. Oil moguls may not be saints, but they ain't the devil. And Exxon/Mobil's posted profits, while seeming exorbitant to us, is (among other cost cutting practices) a byproduct of their streamlined business practices (at least say the non-partisan economics gurus), and compared to other oil companies, they simply have done it better/cheaper. And to be fair, what about the vast sums they pay in infrastructure and R&D? Are they allowed to make that back?

So assuming we still want to remain a capitalist country, should we then punish profit with Windfall Taxes? Sure, let's punish the successful businesses for making money, damn them. But don't worry, if they do get punished, it's not like they are going to leave the country or anything. And while we're at it, let's tell everyone selling their home or property that they should not capitalize on that grotesque increase in prop values. That's hideous, to think that one's home could 2x or 3x its value ...and you didn't even DO anything. Simply unfair, and you should immediately sell below market value; it's the right thing to do.

If we want changes at the pump price, we need to think about decreasing our dependence on foreign oil ...yes domestic is good! Equally important, the taxes levied on pump gas is for what and goes where??? There's another savings. Then the ultimate long term fix: change our habits in transportation and the cars we buy. A decrease in demand will do what to the price again?!!

Please don't mistake this for a rant ...though it does sound conspicuosly like one I just have a bit too much time on my hands at this given moment
Peace, all!

Edward

I'm not against making a profit. But I think it is high time there is some sort of regulation of the oil industry. The Insurance Commission requires that insurance companies submit records and statistics that indeed support that they need to raise their rates. The PSC (public service comission) does the same for the power companies. I think it is naive to think the handful of players in the oil industry are not price fixinig. Profit is one thing but BILLIONS of dollars profit every three months is crazy. I own my own business and the cost of gas has taken a large toll on it. But I can't do anything but pay and pay. I think it is unfair to expect those who earn less than me (minumim wage or there abouts) to absorb the 100% increase in price per gallon in less than eight months. Sorry about MY rant but this is a sore subject for me. I promise now I'm done

I'm with Edward 100%! I believe in capitalism, not socialism. The oil companies provide what we want, at a price we are able to pay. They did not hold a gun to anyone's head and force them to drive a high-performance car or SUV -- if any one's at fault, it's the consumers for driving up demand. There's absolutely no reason for the gov't to punish the oil companies.
