Today I am a man
Well, today i sacked up and got down to business. Finally built up the courage to change my oil. I spent countless hours studying the do it yourself thread on p-car.com and reading all the input from the veterens on this site. Many thanks to you all. Glad to say all went smooth and it only took me two and one half hours. I really thought it was going to be an all day affair. So now it's on to the local testing station for a smog check. I am expecting to pass with flying colors. No CEL's and no smoke. Oh yeah, those of you with lowered cars, how do you get a floor jack under the engine? Mine has very little clearance and i'm not lowered.

Congrats on getting the oil done.
To get enough clearance in the rear, you will need to either drive the car onto wood or other surface to elevate the car or place something under the rear wheels when jacking up the front. In other words, for me, I jack the car up from the rear jacking point. This lifts both the front and rear of the car on that side. I place a jack stand under the front jacking point and some paver-patio bricks under the rear tire. I do the same on the other side.
I then have the car on front jack stands and the rear wheels resting on paver bricks. I then slide the jack under the engine (now with enough clearance) and jack the rear up carefully to place the two rear stands simultaneously.

Oil change is nothing; it's the engine oil filter change that'll show you have hair on your chest.
And why would you want to jack the car via the engine? For me floor jack goes under the normal lifting points ahead of the wheel arches - after driving up onto about 3/4" X 18" X 18" plywood planks under the rear wheels.

Into the fray I go tonight as well! First oil change for me, and looks too easy to be 4 hours
I am sure I will learn soon enough!
I do have a lift (scissor style), so hopefully that will help. If time permits, will tackle the tranny fluid as well. At 70k, i figure it should be changed. Any thoughts there?

Ray Calvo, just call me hairy ape chest. I did both filters and did not have to move the oil return line. Oh by the way,my kids nicknamed me sausagefingers. So it's not like i have dainty hands.

Hmmm, Virgin no more!
If you're not lowered, then you need to get another jack. The all Aluminum one from Sears gets low enough to jack up from either the engine or jacking points, and I AM lowered pretty good. You can also try the alum one from Costco ...a bit cheaper and looks pretty good. Oh, and Congrats!

Good job guys! Next thing you know you will be flushing brakes, and then flushing slave clutch cylinders, then doing a clutch, then.....
First time I did a 993 oil change I swore up and down at the guys who torqued the small oil filter down way too tight as well as the trouble you get into getting it out. I do admire you guys who can remove the small filter without taking off the oil return line...I prefer to take that line off since it drains more oil and makes the filter access easier...
Keep wrenchin'!!
Cheers,
Mike

Like others have said, Congratulations! Strange thing about removing the small filter is that I have found on some cars I can get the filter out without removing the oil line, others, I cannot. Same tools, same technique, different cars... a head scratcher, truly!

Good stuff. I did my first oil change last September. Tomorrow I'll stop at Sunset for filters etc for the next one, will do the tranny for the first time, fuel filter for the first time, and pollen filters (It's Spring, save the nose!). In commemoration of my last daughter's graduation from college in early June, there are H&R sport springs and Bilsteins out in the shipping ether destined for a May fitting. I guess I'm off on the slippery slope ....

One of the benefits, of owning a p-car with a manual transmission, is the option of changing the small oil filter without removing the oil return tube. We tip owners do do not have the same clearance.
