Default Wind screen seals.

I have had trouble with my replaced front screen, it creaks like crazy and it drives me mad, I have posted about this previously. When I took the car to the glazers to investigate the issue they pointed out that there should be some sort of ant-squeel tape around the edge of the screen there the rubber seal sits against the painted body, this was not on the car and as a result the rubber has rubbed away the paint around the top edge of the screen and it looks like its about to rust! Treating the rust is not a problem as the roof is being sprayed next week anyway to remove a large scratch in the middle, but I was anaware of the absence of the protective tape.

Dose this make sence to anyone or are they trying to shift blame and get out of fixing the problem?

Thanks.

HI Gabi,

It does make some sense to me. When I got my current 993, it had some surface rust at one lower corner of the windshield (this was repaired by the dealer prior to purchase). The dealer, whose main business is as an independent service specialist (he and his staff are all ex-Porsche UK), told me that the rust is caused by water and dirt getting in behind the seal and over time, with the flexing of the bodyshell, the seal rubs the dirt through the paint resulting in rust.

To prevent this he uses what he called Teflon tape (I think it is actually the PTFE tape plumbers use to seal threaded connectors) laid around the rim of the windscreen aperture, so that any abrasive of dirt and seal then takes place between the seal and the tape (i.e. not the paintwork). As an added bonus, it may help reduce the windscreen creaking/squeeking problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care,

Steve.

Glad to be of service!

If you're interested, it stands for PolyTetraFluoroEthylene. In it's solid form it's a bit like solid nylon and has good bearing qualities. In tape form it's very conformal and it readily "moulds" itself to bends, curves, etc.

I think it kind of "vacuums" itself down.

Interestingly there is a tape porsche provide which is specifically for this purpose, so it may be worth while anyone that has their screen replaced or car re-sprayed checking to see if this tape has been replaced. If not the grit and seal is likely to rub through the paint and cause rust as has happed to my car.
