Default LSD should I get one?

Engine is coming out in January for an engine upgrade with a target of 350hp and 300+ lbft of torque :-) whilst the engine is out should I go for a LSD install as well?

Car is UK 1995 C2, used 70% for track 30% for street, mods to date include:

PSS9's
RS anti roll bars
RS alignment
Front strut brace
RS engine and tranny mounts
Quick shift
Michelin road legal track tires
LWF and clutch
Big red front, rs rears

At the moment the car has std euro gearing and std diff

The engine will be out for new heads etc, will just have to put up for a LSD about a £1,000 plus labour to fit

What do you reckon should I go for it, how much difference on the track and how much on the street, is it worth it?

Should I wait, do I save a lot by having it done when the engine is already out? I presume you have to pull the engine / tranny to change the diff anyway?

TIA for your thoughts

John

P.S. I presume if I do go for an LSD I should go guards or Porsche motorsport, I have been offered a 40,000 mile lsd out of a 964 RS but will this suffer from the wearing out issues and will probably already be shot?

I have investigated the issue and the no brainer if you track your car as much as you say is the Guard Transmission LSD. Far better built than the stock Porsche item or the Sport unit, it will last you far longer.

My car has 45 K kms and my LSD is shot. If you elect to go for the Guard unit, let me know... I will buy one of these within the next few weeks.

Perhaps a group buy?? You have PM as well.

It will really help on the track "settling" the car under decel. I want one for that alone.

With that much track time, go with the Guards. Wish I had the moola for it.

John,

Remember that only a plate-type LSD (like the Porsche motorsport unit) will offer lock under decel (the better option for track use). A torque-biasing-type will only offer lock under acceleration and is completely open under decel. And if you go with the former, you can specify percentage lockup on accel or decel ...e.g 70%/40%. Guards makes both types, and from what I remember hearing is more durable than the Porsche one, (I think?!). Do your homework as this is a pricey mod when you add parts and the labor, so you want to make sure you actually get what you want.
