Default '95 C4 as a Autocross/DE track car?

I'm looking for a 993 to use for non-serious autocross and DE track driving. Have found a higher mileage '95 C4 that fits my budget. What issues am I going to have with a C4 vs C2? Should I keep looking for a C2 for these applications? This car would be dedicated to AX/Track use only and I would be adding new seats, harness, tires etc.

C2 is fun,C4 is boring. I have a C2 and several C4 ownes have said the C4 is not as exciting to drive !

Sam,

I'm guessing that what you lose with the extra 100 pounds or so that the C4 carries, you gain back with the better AWD grip coming out of the corners. With the right tires, alignment, suspension pieces, I don't think there would be much of a difference C4 versus C2. But I'm just guessing.

Bit of an overstatement, don't you think?

i dont have AWD. i know of a very very fast track driver who campaigned his 98C4S. he can drive circles around C2 or C2S. and when it's wet, he will lap C2's ;-)

Speaking as one of the "boring" owners I find my car quite exciting! I think the driver makes a lot of difference... ;-) I don't see all those Scooby and Evo drives moaning about AWD!

Cheers,

David

If the 4S is superior, why are all the 95, 96, 97 & 98 Factory Cup cars, RS's & RSCS's two wheel drive??

I have driven both cars on track (Willow Springs) at their limits and prefer a 2S with limited slip over the 4S.

This is just my opinion! 4S owners please don't jump me.

Converting a C4 to a C2 is as simple as disconnecting the front driveshaft ... or blowing out your viscous coupler by spinning the car or drag race starts.

The C4 is going to be a bit more ponderous car on the track, especially in the tighter stuff, because of the higher weight, but, having said that, a properly set up C4 can be a very fast track car and not give anything away to a 2WD car. My driver's seat observations of other AWD 993's is that they can put the power down sooner and not have to worry as much about power-on oversteer, especially on Type I corners where you want to maximize exit speed onto a main straight by getting onto the throttle as soon as possible, the grip being split more evenly over all four tires, as opposed to only two rear tires having to handle cornering and power delivery duties. <<<(Is this a run-on sentence?)

That said, I'm not sure why most people tend to go with C2's over C4's as track weapons. Perhaps it's simplicity and the pursuit of lower weight?

Thank you Mark. Always a well thought out and intelligent answer. For track go with C2. If Porsche engineers thought C4s were better weapons then they would have made the GT3 and the race cars C4. They did not. Porsche engineers I think we can all agree are pretty capable individuals. That said both great cars.
