Default refinishing Cups in black....

I have an extra set of 17 inch cup wheels and was thinking about have them refinished in black. Any thought on how the paint will hold up to mounting and dismounting tires?

I'm no expert, but I think if you have them powder coated black as opposed to painting, the finish is much more durable. There are lots of shops that can do this for you. Good luck -- I'm sure you'll get lots of advice on this subject.

I would do flat black powder coating. Flat doesn't show much in terms of fingerprints and damage. I hear powder coating is more durable than spray on finish.

David, I have been thinking about doing the same thing to my wheels ... when you finish this, pm pictures to help me with my decision.

Gordo993 ... can you post pictures of yours?

Thanks, Rick

Another vote for flat black.

My track wheels (17" cups) are painted.
Powder coating is more durable no question about it but I painted my wheels myself.

If you do the prep work properly, sanding and cleaning them and use good quality paint, paint should hold. Originally they are painted also and that holds.

I just had new front track tyres mounted and while I could see little marks, pain hold well.

Did I say flat black looks good?
Here's one photo to convince you.

Finishing magazine has a job shop database that you can search through for powder coating, anodizing and plating shops in the USA, Canada and a bunch of other countries.

Talking Get Er Dun.....

Al Reed Specialty Polishing in Anaheim, CA does a geat job powder coating wheels. He does wheels from all over the country, and I have yet to hear of an unhappy customer.

Al and his wife Diane, with the help of a few worker bees, do all the work themselves. The actually get dirty every day.

Call Al up and ask for the "Feather Merchant's" discount!

I painted my track wheels with a spray can two years ago. The wheels have been on the tire changer four times since then, and the finish still looks fine. I think the most important thing is the type of tire changer being used. The touchless ones leave the wheel looking great.

I agree that powder coating is more durable... but my approach was to try paint and if that didn't hold up then go to powder coating. So far I'm still happy with the paint job.
