Default DIY third brake light repair --- Write-up

If your third brake light has a snaggle tooth feature, meaning that a bulb is burned out, take a look.

I wanted to avoid buyng a new light assembly so a little investigation revaled the individual lamps are available from Porsche for $3.50.

This is an easy fix that requires about 30 mins. of time and minimal skill with a soldering iron.

BTW, I had to upload this in two parts due to file size limitations

HTH,
Scott

Thanks Scott,
I saved that valuable info on disk!
I'm amazed how people can find part number that doesn't appear on the PET. Last week I ordered the pin which hold the gear on the double distribution shaft with it's part number found on Rennlist. You should have see the face of the mechanic. First time he had to order it!

Hi JP,

The part number for the lamp is listed in PET. It is not denoted by a number in an illustration, just listed in the parts list.

Glad it's of use to you!

As a point of reference, does anyone know what a new light assembly would cost?

$189, I think. I'm currently snaggletoothed as well.

A few mos back someone had also posted DIY instructions on replacing the lights in the basket handle with LEDs. I believe these are brighter and also have a longer life.

I converted mine to 5000mcd red LEDs, and am happy with the result. Fabbed up a new circuit board so I can turn the car back to stock later if needed. It was about $15 worth of LEDs and resistors to replace every bulb, plus a few hours of time. Gotta have a hobby....

Cowtown

What is the result with 5000mcd LED's?? Is it brighter?? And if I buy 5000 mcd's can I just replace my actual LCD's with no additional mods?

Thanks for the feedback

I'd say it's about the same brightness or a bit brighter. You also get the instantaneous on/off characteristics of LEDs, which is nice. Since there are 24 lights, I wired them in four parallel sets of 6 LEDs (each set of 6 connected in serial) along with a 50 ohm reisitor with each set. It all fits in the stock housing. I got the LEDs from www.allelectronics.com

I can post pics later if you want.

EDIT: they are 6000mcs LEDs. Here is the direct link: http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bi...-94&type=store

cowton,

Please post some pictures. I'm also ready to replace about 8 LEDs and would more than likely follow your advice on the LEDs. Thanks.

Default Thanks a lot...

Hi Scott...I just fixed my car's third brake light (5 bad bulbs), following your DIY step by step...

These documented DIY procedures are very important for all...by the way...it took me 2 hours and 2 beers...but I'm probably the world's worst welder!

Thank you very much...

Mr. Town,
I'm considering a swap to LED bulbs. Could you shed some more light on how you did this and post pics if you have them?
