Porsche recalls 18'000 993 Cab
I usually post on the 996 board, but just came accross this:

Previous version of the 911 Carrera
Porsche checking Cabriolet roof
Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is checking the roof mechanism worldwide on 18,165 units of the 993-series 911 Cabriolet built in the period from 11 August 1993 - 26 January 1998. This involves 8,252 cars in Europe (6,003 in Germany) and 8,952 cars in the USA. The reason for this inspection is the possibility of the soft top opening inadvertently at high speeds. No accidents or cases of bodily injury attributable to this malfunction have been reported so far.
On a car involving this complaint, Porsche initially assumed that the problem was due to faulty maintenance, since no damage of this kind had been observed before in Porsche's ongoing supervision of products and quality. When two further cases became known in Germany, however, a crack was found in the drive gear of the roof locking motor. Porsche then decided to check all models of this type for reasons of safety, not only inspecting the alignment of the roof and the correct position of the roof attachment pins, but also replacing the two roof locking motors serving to firmly fasten the soft top above the windscreen frame. The new electric motors feature a stronger, reinforced drive gear locking the roof in position, and new sensors provide a safe and reliable warning signal in the instrument cluster whenever the roof is not properly closed when setting out.

Well done Porsche!
I actually have a friend with an early 95 cab that had a broken tooth on the locking gear. He said he fixed it by removing and rotating the gear slightly, so that the offending tooth wasn't being used in the driven portion of it's rotation.
Sounds similar to the recall......
I'll patiently await my postcard...
Clive.

Yes!! Yes!!! Maybe they will fix my driver's side motor now. Maybe they'll even fix my other issues with the roof, like a dead side transmission, that was possibly cause by this.
I say this with all sencerity, because the top lock motor problem is a well known issue that has been ignored for a long time. It's quite a rush, I'll tell you, when your roof pops open by 2" in the middle of Texas at 90 miles an hour.

Just checked with the dealer here in the states and the " Porsche advisor" checked the press release with " Porsche dealer's web site only" and has not yet received any such release yet.
So we will see.

Mike, if you have any luck locally getting them to address your other top issues under the recall ... let me know. I want to use that same dealer :-) ... I've given up and left mine in manual mode.
My passenger side is cranky about latching, I have to lift the roof up a half-inch with my hand as
I press the switch or it won't catch.

It's on the U.S. website too

...but the dealer in Scottsdale hadn't heard about it yet. He suggested waiting a couple weeks. By then Porsche will have sent all of the info to them.

Vic, I'll talk to them when I'm back from Europe in early January. I'm not sure what they'll say about other things. At least I'll want them to do the latching motor. Maybe I'll weasel something on teh transmission if I pay them to do teh top replacement as well.
It's going to be Clair, I think. They did my rust spots and windshiled replacement for free in the spring, car was exactly 10 years old then.
BTW, strange effect in manual mode... I think the rear window creases and under strain. In other words, the middle of the roof, while folded, exerts some serious pressure there. We should definitely get aroud to play with it in the spring and compare.

Gee, this information alone is worth the price of admission. Thanks for bringing it to our attention and thanks to John and Jen for giving us this forum.
