996 vs. 993 observations while shopping today

I was in Pasadena this afternoon for some last minute shopping. I was standing outside the GAP with my son (6) and youngest daughter (3) waiting for my Wife and oldest. There was an Arctic Silver 996 cab parked at the curb. It looked very nice. Across the street was a white 993 cab. I stood outside for a while, just comparing the two, kinda convincing myself that the 996 looked pretty nice. It had a grey top. I was thinking how nice it would be for my top to fold into the car so I wouldn't have to put the boot on or feel guilty not using it. Then the owner showed up and started the car. It was so quiet! I really couldn't believe how quiet the car was. No angry bark at startup, nothing. When it took off it sounded like a honda. I'm sure a wot it sounds great but man, was the startup and initial takeoff sound disappointing. Then the 993 owner shows up, takes the top down, and fires her up. Wow. It sounded so much better. Taking off down the street, the sound was so much louder and sounded so much better than the 996. No comparison. My son even turned his head when the car was taking off. Oh, and if you are on this board Mr. white 993 guy, your car sounds great!

Just my $.02 from the last shoppint day of the year.

The optional Porsche Sports Exhaust for the 996 is very mean sounding - much better than 993 OEM exhaust...

Yeah, I've heard, and been in 996's that sounded mean. Maybe just this car or just the 1000 - 2500 rpm range sound. Seriously, it was Honda quiet.

Not a 996 expert but I know I'm childish enough to enjoy setting off the occasional car alarm. It is almost mandatory in the parking garages and I'm basically idling around. :roflmao: That's the kind of "engine note" I'm looking for but, of course, I'm a huge fan of wot in a tunnel too.

The sound can be deceptive - had a 3.3 Turbo with a stock exhaust that sounded quite but hey - wait a minute - pedal to the metal stirred the blood man - wicked with a 1 bar turbo spring, took off like an F15!!

I buy CD's for noise and cars to drive.

Like I said, I'm childish and immature. At least half the time I leave the stereo off to enjoy the rest of the symphony.

My new TT with Fabspeed's muffler bi-passes sets off 2 car alarms each time I've been in/out so far in my building's subterranean garage. My 993 Cab with the motorsound package never set one off. Houston we may have a problem....

You are not the only one. Perhaps we can set up a "play date".

I never want to drown out the cacophony of the beautiful 993 motor sounds with music! I installed an RSR exhaust and left the stock stereo in, who needs it when the car creates the best music to my ear.
