Younger Brother in the 10's (996TT)
I dont know what the hype is, but its big talk around the 996 crowd.
Personally. This car is automatic and this works to the guys advantage. A automatic is better suited for drag racing as the turbo never looses spool between gears as the gas pedal is always depressed. Also, the car has upgraded turbos etc. Anyway, I think Eddie Car is waaaay more impressive versus this.

"1990 DSM (9.9@143 ET in the 1/4) Top 10 Mitsubishi AWD drag cars in the country"
Well reading that line in your sig, I see why you aren't impressed
I am still scratching my head as to why they aren't deep into the 10's if not into the 9's. I think if they ever got serious abuot straight line performance and gathered a few people to reprogram the DME, split the transfer case torque at a different ratio, and just give it some sticky rubber, a seriously quick 996 would emerge.

From reading the magazine article, it appears that they were slow on the launch. Probably due to not being drag-strip drivers and not wanting to blow out the clutch in the middle of the competition. You have to remember that these are all street legal cars that were running on Toyo tires (and not slicks). Wasn't it Car & Driver that got good times on a tt by running the rpms to 5k before dropping the clutch. This gave them the best launch. I wouldn't want to do that on a car with 600+ hp when if I blew my clutch I knew I would lose the competition.

Well, yes, they aren't drag racers. But from what I've driven, AWD cars aren't that hard to launch if you have no fear and a good drivetrain. The tires they used, by the way, weren't really street tires. They were Toyo RA-1s, their DOT-legal race tires. Basically slicks with minimal tread to be legal for the first mile you drive them.
