FIXED - Leak from shift linkage/rubber boot under car
I have several drops of what appears to be gearbox oil under my car. At first I thought my gearbox drain plug might be leaking. Dry as a bone.
The leaks are forward of there, right below the rubber "accordian-style" boot that runs through the tunnel from the shift linkage up front to the gearbox. It's the boot that's visible from below the car, mid-section, approximately under the parking brake or rear tunnel.
The boot is very wet with the fluid. But I'm only getting about one - two drops per week. It's grayish - black fluid.
Any ideas? What should I fix?
Thanks!
John

If part#19 on the above drawing is full of oil, then I would say the seal of the link shaft is gone.
Part# 999.113.404.40 (PET 302-05)
This seal can be replaced without dropping the gearbox.

Thanks Gert. As usual, you're spot on. I thought it was part 18 but it is part 19.
Would it seem odd for a 20k mile car to have the seal go bad? Should I expect all of the gearbox oil to come out when I replace it?
Part 28 is the one I think we're talking about.
Thanks,
John

Yes, part#28 is the one to replace.
In reality it looks different then on the drawing.
It's got a big edge on the outside which makes it pretty easy to get out.
Because of the shaft bearing (#27) the oil will leak during replacement. Maybe it's a good opportunity to change the gear box oil anyway?

Thanks Gert. Just changed it before my last track event last year (maybe August). But, will definitely have some on hand to top it off.
Shall I get any other "might-as-well-replace-them-while-I'm-there" parts?

Well, I finally got around to replacing the seal mentioned above (part #28). The seal is shown here -- it's the brown washer-like part. Essentially, it's a hat, with a hole through the top.
It's hard to tell why the old one was leaking. I hope this fixes the problem. If anyone has a wet boot around the shift linkage that attaches to the transmission, replacing this part is suppost to fix the leak.
I lost about two - three tablespoons of gearbox oils during the replacement.
Getting the old one off was hard, as I don't like to force things. However, I got a large vice-grip around the seal and successfully twisted and pulled it off.
Putting the new one in was hard. Sliding it on the shaft and partly into the trans case was easy, but getting it all the way on (a remaining 3MM or so) was tough. I had to remove the black center tunnel cover, then put a spark plug socket (sans the rubber grommet) over the shaft and butting against the seal, then pounded it in with a rubber mallet and finishing it with a few taps from a hammer. Hopefully, there wasn't a better way to do this -- I couldn't find anything in TFM (are these manuals really any good for anyone?).
After replacing the seal, the shifter is very tight. Let's hope it loosens up over the next few days/weeks.
If anyone has questions about this, please let me know.
Thanks,
John
