Default OBD Scanner for 1995

I tried using the loaner OBD scanner from Autozone on my 1995 993, but it wouldn't work. It has the correct plug, but won't interface. I had used it previously on my Lexus RX300 with no problem. I'm guessing their scanner works only with OBD-II or later.

I don't have any problems with my 993 currently, just curious as to how to read the OBD codes. Does anyone have the answer?

To my knowledge the OBD ll codes started in 1996. Some readers/scanners only read OBD ll codes but there are plenty that read both l and ll. Hope I'm correct.

Porsche's scanner protocol's before 1996 (OBD-II) were totally proprietary and the only way to "talk" to these 1995 and earlier cars is with the Bosch KTS-300, also called the Hammer. It also must have the special Porsche software loaded into it.

An OBD-II scan tool (besides the Hammer or PST-2/PST-3)doesn't work and neither will anything else besides the above tool.
