993 The Last True Porsche?
#33
Hi,
If I may bring my opinion: I have the chance to cherish a 911 Carrera, type 997, acquired a couple of months ago. It is my first Porsche.
I dreamt of having an 911 since the beginning of my studies; I used to see them going down "boulevard Saint-Germain" while I was on the bus to my university every mornings. I kept telling myself that perhaps I could have an 911 on my own one day. At that time, they were 993 types.
Today they are 997 and for me, they are true Porsches. Mine is so vivid in me, and makes this moment of my life so intense, that it can only be true. So you see, your 993 isn't the last, because there's no last, but a sequel.

GT3 and 996TT look mean, especially if lowered and with right wheels. I really like the side induction scoops.
WRT level of automation in the 993, from CAR Magazine 100 Coolest Cars (5/04): "Each 993, with its cockpit design dating back to the labor-intensive 1960s, took the Porsche workforce 130 hours to build. Its replacement, the 996, takes less than half that." The 993 came in 5th place of 100 "Because God - or Dr. Porsche, as he sometimes likes to be known - made 911s air-cooled".

Were not the last 993s and the first 996s built on the very same line in '98? I seem to recall a picture somewhere that actually showed both cars going down the final assembly line together, so I'm not sure how less hand built the 996s really are. Then again I've never had the chance to take the factory tour yet, but someday soon when my boys are old enough to enjoy it ,we'll be there. I would also put forth that a 996 with ROW 030 and a nice sport exhaust is every bit as visceral as a 993. Don't get me wrong I would buy a new 993 in a flash if they were still produced ( I still kick myself for not buying that new AS 993 back in '97 ). They're all real Porsches.
Happy Holidays!
