Post 993 ducktail group buy

[I moved this to another thread because it may have been lost inside the other one.]

To all interested parties:
OK, I did some research and I am ready to do this now. Peter at Rennspeed in Duarte, CA is familiar with the Japanese 993 ducktail project and he is willing to do one for the group. If he can get 5 confirmed orders he will do the 993 ducktail (using your exisiting 993 grill) for an unbelievable $300 and the product will ship in about 2 weeks from the commencement of the project. As soon as I have 5 firm buyers we will commence. I will coordinate the group buy so please email me offline at jcolasante@nyc.rr.com.
Please note I do not intend to profit from this at all. No payments will be made to me and I will receive no compensation for this effort. Ultimately you will make payments directly to Rennspeed. All customer support issues will be taken up with the manufacturer. I am merely facilitating the inital offer. Please serious only for the first 5 orders so we can get this moving without delay.

Rennspeed's website is:
http://www.wholesaler-usa.com/rennspeed/

Click on "parts corner". There are also several threads about Peter and Rennspeed over at the Pelican BBS, you can search them out. I have also asked Peter to send some photo samples which I'll post.

As of 8/13 only 2 more serious parties are needed to initiate the mold.

Angry

That thing was ugly when introduced in '73-'74; age has done nothing to enhance it's appeal to me.

You want to "uglify" your 993, have fun! I just hope it's reversible without visiting a body & fender shop for a repaint.

Good luck, JC!

Ray,
The ducktail is totally reversible. It is a one piece unit that takes the place of your exisiting decklid. You would just need to remove your grill and bolt it on to the ducktail just like back in '73. It sounds like you may be keen on one, I'll pencil you in as a tentative buyer and you can let me know for sure...

Here are some photos of recent work that Peter sent as examples from his shop. The ducktail pictured is the RS ducktail for '73 911.

Hi JC,

Unlike Ray , I'm a big fan of the ducktail, and I think it must be due to my memories of them from the 70's. I might get one for my 993, but one thing that I haven't seen is information on how effective they are vs. the stock spoiler. How is the downforce and cooling? I'm using my 993 for the track, so I'd hate to add the ducktail only to find out that handling and heat dissipation were compromised. Do you have any data on this?

Thanks!

Skip,
Unfortunately I don't have any data about the ducktail on the 993; we're going to be doing a little exploration into new territory here. My educated guess is that it will be similar in characteristics to the 993 RS fixed tail. I plan to run the Supercup front splitters along with the ducktail.

C'mon, you know you want one. Go for it man! At $300 what's the worst thing that can happen? (Don't answer that).

I kind of like the way it looks. I wonder what it would look like on a widebody. Is anybody ordering one that has an S?

Just a word of advice, The factory and aftermarket tuners (Techart,RUF,ect) match the tail and front bumper cover to improve downforce, aerodynamics ect. The front and back work with each other to keep the car stable at high speeds. I think the duck tail looks pretty cool but I would be careful if the car is spending a lot of time on the track. Not trying to rain on the parade, just a word of caution. If the car is street only, no problems that I can think of.

Hi JC,

I didn't even see the $300 price as I was skimming the text, and was assuming that it was going to be more. Count me in!

I'll probably leave it unpainted until I've tried it a few times to see if there are any differences. That plus some other mods will keep the test-and-tunes over the Winter interesting.

An email confirmation is on the way.

JC,

Did you receive my e-mail (with the content) this time..? I'm in.

Since I kinda 'started' this ductail thing (in that "Carrera stripes" post), I don't want to be left out...

I think that Kim's out of control. When I was at his house doing the big red install, he has an extra room FULL of parts. I think that he's trying to corner all the parts on the entire west coast!

Group buy update: Peter has informed me that the 993 grill will not work well in this application. He did some examination of the parts and said it's too big and it does not curve enough to look good. So he says he is going to use the SC/Carrera black plastic grill. This is what the Japanese 993 ducktail uses. The original '73 911 ducktail used the metal grill which is too rare to find nowadays.

Further, Peter informs me that the cost of the item will go up after the initial group buy, so get me your confirmation this week! I am going to close the group buy on Friday.

Sorry for the changes but I think it's for the better.

If I had a 87-89 I think a duck tail would be awesome. But a 993? Has anyone ever seen a 80's 930 tail on a 993, it looks very cool!
