Renting a 993 in Vegas...

Hello all,

I have been a lurker here for quite a while.

A little history about myself:

I am 30yrs old, live in Charlotte NC and have always wanted a 911. Growing up in Connecticut we lived on a relatively busy street on the way to the beach. To me the 911's were the most unique looking, sounding and later discovered, feeling. My ears would always perk up when I heard that flat boxer 6 whine on acceleration. I used to race to an open window in the summer time to catch a glimpse of one driving by.

Over the years I have quelled my lust by driving other peoples Porsches (OPP). I've driven a 86 911 coupe, targa and 1990 C2 Targa. I loved them all, the C2 probably the best because it was a little easier to drive on a daily basis. But when the 993 came out, I thought that it was the pinnacle of the 911 design though I haven't driven one..yet. I believe it will be until the 997 comes out. The 996 just doesn't do it for me aesthetically.

Anywho, I'm a little closer to owning one. I would love to buy a 993 now but of course have other priorities (subjective) like planning to have a baby and getting a bigger house. What I will probably do is once I get the house use the equity to get a loan and write off the interest. I really have to sell my wife on this first though.

Thats where the Vegas trip comes in..

I am planning a trip to Vegas w/my wife over the summer for our anniversary and plan on renting a 993 cabriolet for the day (part of my grand scheme!) I think once she drives it she'll have an appreciation for the make. If she doesn't theres always divorce..j/k.

Has anyone here driven around Las Vegas? I know the strip looks rather flat and boring. What would be some good roads/highways to take? Right now we are just planning on going to the Hoover Dam that day w/the car.

Also I would be looking to buy a coupe that is completely stock. I may be dissapointed w/the convertibles chasis flex.

Thanks for the input and I hope to one day be a regular poster!

Scott

By the way..
This is who rents them in Vegas..along w/others.

I drove with my son from the SF Bay area to Vegas in Jan 2002. Vegas itself is not so great for a 993 test drive. I recommend the Hoover Dam side trip, and if you have time, a trip up to Death Valley, where Porsche regularly does testing. Bring SPF 45 and hats if the top is down. I would prefer a coupe with AC blasting. Of course, by the time you are at Death Valley, you might as well do Yosemite.

Sounds like a great plan. However, I do not think you will be disappointed in the slightest with the cab. 993's are as tight as a drum, cab or coupe and in Vegas, I would definitely go with a cab rental!

Just playing devil's advocate, but she may then equate the 993 with the 'dream weekend' and imagine it as an extravagance going forward - that it's too emotional a decision you've made. I would plant the seeds for the Porsche now and have your financial case prepared well in advance. Make sure you can back it up with "I can afford it" - not "we"....

Good luck - on all fronts!

I cant imagine that a cab would be too much fun on a Vegas 115 degree day. You might want to think about a coupe w/ AC. I took a trip from the bay area to vegas back in '95. The AC in my Corrado was busted but I did have light tint on the windows. I was cooler w/ the windows up than the windows down. Just unbearable heat.

Good point Pete. I know that when the time comes I can appeal to her rational side by going over the numbers w/her.. as she is not an impulse shopper of clothes or anything else for that matter. She is very good w/money. Thank God!

Take I-95 north and visit Mt. Charleston. It'll be much cooler and the loop will give you MANY twists and turns to enjoy. It'll take you a few hours but it's worth it. There are amenities at the top of Mt. Charleston so it's a nice stopping point with great views.

Here's the link to Mapquest:

Scott,

my wife and I rented a 993 coupe last year and drove to Death Valley and to Red Rock canyon. It's a pretty good drive with straight and twisties.........perfect for the 993 experience.

I would suggest booking the car you want in advance. The pickings were slim when we were there!!

Good Luck!!

Well that link didn't load very well! Let's try once more:

Mt. Charleston Drive

Hwy 157 is only about 30 minutes off the strip.

Thanks guys for the suggestions..

Chaz, Do you remember where you rented the 993 coupe? I haven't been able to find anyone in Vegas that rents 993 coupes. Thanks much.

Great, I'll check it out!

GTR 993 04-09-2003 04:53 PM

I used Rent-A-Vette also on my Bachelor Party trip a few years back for a Ferrari, they are very expensive from memory It was $499.00 per day, the first 50 miles was included and $1.00 per mile after. Unless it has changed that is pretty steep ($1 per mile) for a long trip. I would check around there is more than a few places. The cab would be ok with the top down and air on sounds crazy buy it will keep you cooler.
