Go to My-Porsche.com WKD-483-420 OBD II Diagnostic Manual, 911 Carrera (993) 1996-98 $58.31. If you get it, let me know what you think. I'm considering the OBDII software for the PDA. Could be very Interesting.

I wonder if anyoone owns this book..does it have any insight into the "typical" check engine light that seems to plague so many people..

I dont know about the book, but every manufacturer has Specific codes. All 'POxxx' codes are the same for everyone, but all codes that have the second digit other than 0 are manuf. specific, like P1xxx or P1187. The government mandates that all emission related fault codes be specific. Like a P0306 is a misfire on cylinder number 6, for every car (if equipped of course). However a P1615 is a powertrain fault as well, but not related to tailpipe emissions, and therefore a P1615 will not be the same from car to car. Example would be the PPS (pedal position sensor) on a Corvette, that code would be something like a P1xxx, and no other car has that, so it is specefic. Also includes T or B codes for trans and body codes, as well as the other 16 modules most cars have now.

Forgot to mention the most common reason for Check Engine light to be on, is a P04xx something, which is an Evap leak, or someone left the gas cap loose, or filled it up with the car running, and it just happen to run the evap monitor at that point.

If Im not mistaken the most commone engine code for the 993 is 300-306 which is misfire of a cylinder. This seems to come up very often and have many fixes (temporary and permanent). Kim that would be great if you would do some looking..I would be very interested to see what the book has to say about the misfire. It is very vague and could be many different problems..Thanks

I looked in vain for the most likely CEL code, whichI believe is P1410 or 1411 - left hand or right hand Secondary Air Injection fault. The infamous clogged SAI port issue. Is it in there someplace??
